Joseph Lowery's benediction.

I missed the benediction during the live-blog, so let me video-blog it now:

1:00: The first thing I notice is that this man is very old. I see that he was born in 1921, and he's been through a lot. I see him as representing a long history and feel inclined to give him the maximum latitude to express whatever it is he feels in his heart.

3:08: "Help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate, on the side of inclusion, not exclusion, tolerance, not intolerance. And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold onto the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family."

4:40: Here's the black/get back/brown/stick around/yellow/mellow part of the prayer that I heard Rush Limbaugh riffing about. Rush didn't like the airing of old grievances when obviously black people are not being held back today and so forth, but I'd say, this was a light-hearted reference to the wrongs of the past, by a man who could have fulminated about the long civil rights struggle, but chose instead to speak almost entirely of love and unity.

Really, I think it's mean-spirited to complain about anything here. It was done very well.

The Caucus live-blogged the media reaction:
Juan Williams, a Fox News contributor [said] “He is the real deal. There are other people who might say that they were there with Dr. King, and suffered the indignities, but Joe Lowery really did... There are some times in your life that you just think, ‘What a country. How can that be? I never thought that would happen.’ But there it was, and I just thank God that Joe Lowery was able, in that moment, to talk about the power of the silent tears.”

Micheal,

What is bizarre and hilarious is that you can't accept a black person can be a republican or a conservative. Try Lashawn Barber or do you believe she isn't black either. You aren't just an idiot, you're a gutless idiot.

jeff said...

"jeff: Why not point it out?

Talk is cheap."

Why, I believe I have. Might want to brush up on that reading comprehension of your own. Anyone else having difficulties?

Chennaul said...

By the way that author would be Booker T. Washington another African American Republican but he wouldn't be a leader because?

Or Janice Rogers Brown she's not smart enough....

Unknown said...

Alex: are you referring to the fact that Obama acknowledged his (maternal)grandmother's racism? Forgive me if I'm missing something. I just want to clarify.

Alex said...

MichaelTroll - just because 95% of blacks are duped by the Democrats doesn't mean that the 5% who are not are stupid. What has the Great Society done for black America except:

* more crime
* more poverty
* teenage pregnancy rampant
* white America terrified of seeing a young black male on the street

vbspurs said...

BTW, I wonder if anyone out there shares my discomfiture about this:

The Benediction part that first antagonised me was not the white bit, though I am white.

During Ann's live-blog, I commented real-time on the "yellow is mellow" line, because for whatever reason, that's the bit that rankled me the most.

Maybe it's my own personality, because I remember being offended by Reggie White's words -- which I quoted above -- the most, regarding the Asians being able to turn a television into a watch...

It goes to show that you don't have to be white, or "yellow" or "red" (*) specifically to be offended at this man's awkward words.

(*) (God, seriously, did Lowery really say this...IN PUBLIC, AT AN INAUGURATION? Flaming chopsticks!)

Chennaul said...

Michael-

What's your criticism of Booker T. Washington, or Janice Rogers Brown?

Alex said...

BTW, this post should disabuse anyone of the notion that Althouse is anything but a flaming lib. She insists there was no racism in that, only a mad dog liberal would insist on that.

Effie - he called his grandmother racist because she avoided a black man on a street, well I do that all the time!

Unknown said...

Thanks for clarifying for me, Alex.

Michael, I'll ask again:

What exactly is your point, Michael?

Lowery's racist remarks were divisive and wrong.

Liberals and conservatives spewing invective rather than engaging in meaningful debate is wrong.

What, exactly, is it about these two statements that is bothering you? Your post doesn't make it clear.

Roberto said...

jeff, instead of blathering on about things you know little...why not read a biography of Carver.

If you think he was some kind of political force within the black community you're as dumb as Alex.
(One of Carver's best buds was Henry Ford...author of "International Jew")

And that's saying a lot.

Unknown said...

vbspurs: Yeah, that whole bit bothered me.

Unknown said...

Effie-That was really the crux of my consternation here. I read this whole thread and still can't quite fathom how it turned into a liberal vs. conservative thing.

Also, It doesn't affect how I feel about Obama either. I still want him to do good. He is my president now. It simply put a BIG damper on my celebration and I didn't care for it nor think it was appropriate. And by the way. I am in no way a fan of Rush Limbaugh. He's too divisive, but so was Lowery's comment.

Freeman Hunt said...

There's no optical illusion. Obama's smile clearly changes into a look of concerned annoyance.

vbspurs said...

Thanks for clarifying for me, Alex.

Uh, Effie. As your self-designated Althouse newbie buddy, I have to warn you about [...].

Oh. Never mind. I'm sure you'll find out on your own.

Cheers,

Roberto said...

"What's your criticism of Booker T. Washington, or Janice Rogers Brown?"

Huh?

I have none.

I also have no real criticism of James Brown, Jim Brown or Denzel Washington.

Got a point?

vbspurs said...

Yeah, that whole bit bothered me.

The thing about people who preach anti-racism, but have not conquered the racism inside their own selves, is that I've observed they're equal opportunity racists.

There's a very funny skit in a Wayans Bros. film about this, if interested. *g*

Alex said...

All Democrats can go to hell including Althouse. She is a flaming racist.

Freeman Hunt said...

The yellow part bugged me too. A friend and I were trying to figure out what that was supposed to mean... Asians are too intense? I get that he was quoting lyrics, but how they translate into modern times matters.

Unknown said...

vbspurs: Yeah, yeah. I know. I just thought I'd try one last time for a thoughtful response. I'm ever the optimist (sometimes foolishly).

Alex said...

These are not times for "thoughfulness", but revenge, hate and war.

Freeman Hunt said...

Michael, are you infecting others with your posting style now? How are you doing that? Fess up.

Alex said...

If America burns because of Obama and his minions, I will not cry for it. America deserves to go down in flames.

holdfast said...

Michael has taught me that liberal really don't like it when blacks step off the reservation (ooh! a rascist two-fer!). Seriously, it's like when someone like Clarence Thomas refuses to spout the party line (the Dem party, not the black party) all the super-progressive dems go apeshit on black man who dared to step out of like - the vibe is like "after all WE have done for you, how could you betray US like this you dirty traitor!?"

Pretty vile really

jeff said...

His grandmother rode the bus to go to work when he was living with his grandparents. At the time, she was the only one working and supporting the family. On one ride there was a young man who was threatening riding the same bus. She asked her unemployed husband if he could drive her to work. He told Obama that she was afraid of the threatening man because he was black and to teach her there was no danger he made her continue to ride the bus. Also that meant he could sleep in.

That would be your fact that he acknowledged his grandmothers racism. I believe he wrote about it in one of his books.

Unknown said...

These are not times for "thoughfulness", but revenge, hate and war.

Only if you buy into it.

I don't.

Alex said...

As long as Michael continues posting his hate, I will hate in return.

Still with your poor reading comprehension. What I said was he couldn't possibly be a political force for the black community. White Michael didn't sign off on it.

The yellow part bugged me too.

Remember a few years back, during then First Lady Hillary Clinton's various "listening tours", she encountered a classroom full of kids (of all colours), engaging them about racism, so as to seem more sensitive to the topic? One little girl piped up that the Power Rangers' uniform colours disturbed her.

HC: "Oh, why?"
Little Girl: "They put the yellow one representing Asia."
HC: *a look of horror, shock and bewilderment crosses her face*

I wonder...was she as shocked at Lowery's words, seated just a few away from him, or being a loyal party member who is no ways tired no how, did she just dismiss his words with a gracious cluck of understanding?

Asians are too intense?

Freeman, don't try to make too much sense of rhyming nonsense. It's like Muhammad Ali's famous soliloquys. He didn't actually fly like a butterfly. :)

Why can't shift out of the hate mode? It's really sad.

Your guy won, the Obamas have dressed up and are celebrating in the nation's capitol and you can't enjoy it. Instead your here at Ann's place in the hopes of making anyone feel one percent as miserable as you do.

Sounds reasonable to me. I am betting that Democrats had similar feelings about Reagan, Bush, Bush, McCain, etc etc etc. Pretty much the reason we have two parties in congress.

Alex: I feel you on the last 8 years thing. A good deal hate-mongering did come out of the liberal camp. Having said that, I should also say that I'm a registered Independent with left-leaning social views. On some issues I'm conservative, and on others I find myself conflicted. I suppose that at the end of the day, most people would still brand me as a liberal. And just for the record, I don't hate you.

Alex said...

Effie - I don't know you so I won't pronounce judgment right now. All I do know is that since college I've been experiencing the unadulterated hate from the left - going on 17 years now. If the left does not cease with their triumphalist displays and hate-mongering, they will get blowback that will make the Bolshevik Revolution look like a day at the park.

chickelit said...

Michael always comes back. Try ignoring him. A week or so ago there was thread with Michael and the infamous "Mary" character. She's piece of work too. Althouse deletes her. Utterly fascinating.

Unknown said...

Alex: I'm not disagreeing with you. Like I said, I can understand why you feel that way. I would say that it has cut both ways, though. Conservatives have not always been kind to liberals.

The whole thing is a damn shame, really, because the only purpose it serves is to blind everyone to real issues.

Anyway, thanks for not passing judgment on me, personally. It's maybe a start?

maybe people like me are one good reason *not* to buy into that kind of bullshit.

I'm not going to try to undo the last 17 years for you in one night. I just like to believe that most of us (liberal or conservative) have good intentions at heart and can partake in reasonable dialogue if we put our minds to it. And I know some people say it can't happen, but buying into that won't change things.

Anyway, thanks for being patient with me. I enjoyed talking to you.

Good night.

Ah, Crack Emcee: I don't understand why anyone would be a Republican or a conservative, not just you. Of the speakers I saw on the broadcast of the Republican convention, only two speakers seemed to be concerned about their fellow man: Cindy and John McCain. "Friends don't let friends vote Republican" as the bumper sticker reads.

I admit I did not understand your point about all races being stupid, etc. If you have not experienced racism, you're fortunate; if you have experienced racism and immediately forgave the racist, I admire you.

At an unreasonable time, at the wrong venue.

Was the point.

Well, as Jesus says in Matthew:
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.

So Mrs. King's funeral seems to me to be an appropriate time and place for Lowery to have hungered and thirsted after justice, because Mrs. King had likewise hungered and thirsted after justice. As Jesus said, blessed are both of them.

Let's forget white people for a moment. Here's the problem with Lowery's speech. It's based entirely on stereotypes. For the most part, those stereotypes don't exist. I did factory work my entire life. I worked with blacks and still have the same black friends from the Army that I've known since the 60's. I've watched Hmong, who were people who didn't have any written language, had no knowledge of electricity, eventually pass up blacks in areas of home ownership, education, business start-ups. I also watched blacks from places such as Nigeria do the same thing. That attitude that people like Lowery express, is what holds back blacks in the US. The problem that people like Michael, and libs in general, is that The Crack Emcee is not a song and dance man.

and as for being thrown under the bus that was only after a person of another race lurred me with a sob story to his hometime only then with a slip of the tongue to make such a mess of my mind and character even the bus refused to comment. They had to call in the police and a firetruck to throw me further under heavier places where my heart ached so bad. I need a moving truck and boxes to pick up the pieces and exist in shame

heck, hell might even be a vacation, now.

Funny cause I feel the same way about liberals. Conservatives care more about personal liberty and personal responsibility. Liberals believe the average Joe can't wipe his ass without a well funded Federal program.

Don't even bother with that tool. He's nothing more than a troll and a bad one at that. You'd have a better conversation with a rock than that moron.

OhioAnne said...

Sorry, Ann, but you are wrong.

Most of what he said was good .... and it took him all of a minute to forget his own words.

Yesterday, I heard someone at work say that Obama could change the world, but can't do it unless we all get on board. Absolutely true .... but it was also true of every administration.

If we just forget all politicial and philosophical difference of opinion and "get on board", any president can achieve the change that he wants to achieve.

Barack Obama is my President today. I sincerely hope he is a success.

But, if he wants to end divisiveness, then he should lead by example. Lowery did him a disservice yesterday by adding the comment and pretending that he didn't does nothing to advance inclusiveness. Obama picked Lowery to give the benediction and is responsible for the comment.

Now, does he have to throw Lowery under the bus - no, I actually hope that he doesn't. He does, however, need to make it clear that the next four years won't be 4 long years of blaming everyone else - if he actually wants people to "get on board".

"Day of Reconciliation and Renewal" is nothing but a joke otherwise.

Conservatives care more about personal liberty and personal responsibility. Liberals believe the average Joe can't wipe his ass without a well funded Federal program.

Let's apply these principles to a small part of the current crisis, and see which side comes out better:

Bernie Madoff is personally responsible for losing $50 billion of his investors' money. Bernie Madoff doesn't have $50 billion to pay these people back. Conclusion: Personal responsibility doesn't go very far.

Perhaps we could exploit his personal responsibility by putting Bernie in a dunk tank, and charge $100 a throw. If every man, woman, and child in North America paid for a throw, that should recoup Bernie's investors' losses. But being dunked 500 million times might be harmful to Mr. Madoff.

Could a well funded Federal program have prevented the losses? The Securities and Exchange Commission did not, although they apparently had been warned. The SEC was established as part of the New Deal's efforts to prevent a future Great Depression. But those efforts were deprecated by Republicans and conservatives, especially during the W. administration.

Can a well-funded Federal program save the asses of Madoff's average Joe investors? Yes and no. The relevant Federal program, the Securities Investor Protection Corp., has only $1.6 billion to give. Conclusion: the well-funded Federal program actually needs to be well-funded to protect our asses.

Advantage: Liberals.

Hey Allen S. :)

It's funny that you mention the Hmomg, since of course, Eastwood's "Gran Torino" is all the rage right now.

Let's do a little exercise in imagination, shall we? :)

Pretend it was Walt Kowalski, the Archie Bunkeresque main character, giving this benediction.

A blue-collar, average, stereotype-a-minuite white guy, who even at the end never really learnt that his stereotype insults were that bad to speak out loud -- even when he clearly had reformed himself.

What do you think would've been the reaction of this crowd, had he been saying "yellow is mellow" and "red man get ahead man", plus all the rest?

I think we all know the answer, and no, I'm sorry, the facts do not change because of what he went through.

It's either wrong to say it, or it's not. There is no middle ground in using racial stereotypes.

Cheers,
Victoria

If Bernie Maddof is the best you can come up with to defend your ideology, run with it baby.

Because you guys did a bang up job with public housing, welfare, education, criminal law, entitlement spending and lets not forget the Community Reinvestment Act where people who can't really afford a home can get one anyway.
