I hate hate hate hate hate what they've done to Blogrolling.

I don't even want to talk about it. Just try using my blogroll now if you want to know what is pissing me off.

UPDATE: I've taken Blogrolling out of my template. I'll make a list of links by hand, and I apologize to all the bloggers who've temporarily lost their links.

Lem! Brewski?

This is what the current Blogger template is for.

Blogger.com --> Layout --> Add a Gadget --> Link List. You can make as many lists as you want, and they'll have exactly the links you put in there, in alphabetical order or whatever order you want.

I must assume at the least you mean the hijacking of the linked site into a frame containing an ad and can appreciate your dislike for this. On the plus side it's less obtrusive than a pop-up.

As a new blogger I had looked into it but wondered about the problems that took them down and the multiple months of retooling for 'BR 2.0' mentioned on their 'status' page. I never really spent any time looking into the history of who was having the issues and why.

Like JAC suggests, I just used the Blogger gadget.

However seeing the 'Tucows' footer on the 'new' BR home page bothers me. That's all I'll say...

Pissed-off about a "blogroll"?

I can't remeber the last time I saw somebody get so angry over any kind of roll.

That's horrible. They're nicking the link and putting up and ad.

Why do you use BlogRoll with Blogger? Just curious. Seems unnecessary given the built in options of Blogger.

Even the ads are stupid. A text link at the top of the page! What kind of moron would pay for that?

Ron buddy... waht are you talking about?

I was just snarking. you know?

I dont have a blog.. to me that's waht Althouse is for.

I'm not in the least aware of the Althousian public works.. I just love the way shes allways there .. even when she takes leave of her senses.

I tried to switch my blog to the new layouts format where you can use Bloggers own blog list, but it screwed up the formatting of my ads. I gave up and went back to the old-fashioned template where I can't just ad a widget.

Lem, it is commonly assumed that when you start using words like "waht" or "tath" that you are drunk. More often than not, the assumption is correct.

I thought my Spanish posting was the dead give away.

What is a common question.. so if i don't know how to spell it "when I'm drunk" it may explain a lot of things ;)

This is some kind of professor... she will try and accommodate her students even when they dont deserve it. IMHO ;)

Hopefully I will be allowed to be a permanent student here.. just the way they have them all over. (you know what i'm talking about)

The thing is.. unlike my driving when I'm drunk my thinking portals are open.

For those of you in IT you know waht I mean by portal.

Now if there is a problem with that.. I would be willing to blow on an something of Althousian detector.. should I be denied the privilege of posting..

I just want to make my commitment clear ;)

Not only was this the first time I've clicked on one of the links in your blogroll, it's the first time I've even looked at it.

Completely randomized lists are the latest thing in computer generated lists.

Plus the Judge Shirley ad won't let me click on it. Do I have to live in 'Sconsin for it to work?

"Completely randomized lists are the latest thing in computer generated lists."

I've been in IT most of my life and don't know what you're talking about.

How would you tell a randomized list from one where the owner organizes it by preference?

You scared me dude. I frequent /. and if you're familiar, you know where I'm coming from.

It's not alphabetical.
It's not chronological
It's not by distance.
It's not from high to low, or low to high.
It's not by price, or height, or age.
There is no discernible order at all.
It's as random as Althouse's current blogroll.

But: If anyone can discern an order in Althouse's blogroll, please tell me what it is.

Ann Althouse said...

My blogroll was always alphabetical, and now suddenly it's not. But with Instapundit and my friend Nina at the top, it certainly doesn't look random. I assure you, however, that I did absolutely nothing to cause this change Blogrolling did it to me. I hate them.

Thanks for the feedback. We've had a couple of sorting issues with the launch of the new software system that the team is working on - we're not sure why the display isn't reflecting the sort options you've chosen, but we'll work it out.

With regards to the ads, we really have no choice but to move in this direction. Blogrolling is a labor of love that leaves us several thousands of dollars per month out of pocket. Moving in a direction where we provide services on a subscription basis, or included ads, was really the only option we saw available to us. The model we picked allows you to choose which way you want to go - if you don't want to pay for our service, we show ads, if you pay for our service (just $20) then we don't show ads. Its a very simple arrangement and gives everyone some choice, without putting us underwater in operating the service. Sorry that you hate us so much - I'd encourage you not to - we're actually pretty nice people and after all, its just a free blog widget.

If I can help with anything ever please don't hesitate to ask.

You can change the sorting back to alphabetical by logging in to your blogrolling account and going to Advanced Options.

That said, I agree with you, the new blogrolling sucks and I'm not paying $ 20 just to get around the ads.

I LOVE my blogger blogroll gadget - the blogs rotate as they are updated, you always see what is new, and have both a link to the main blog and the individual post - it is dynamic and much more fun than they static list. It does take up alot of room, but it is worth it - especially with a quality blogroll like yours.

You may find that you'll have a rule that if a blog hasn't been updated in a month or three months, you remove it - otherwise, I think you will love it. As for room for ads, you might consider a three column format.

Rose said...

Note: if you do decide to switch formats, make sure you not only back up your template (that's a given) but also manually make a copy of all your links and add-ons - when you switch things will be lost, and you will have to add them back in manually, using the various gadgets.

It's time-consuming, so do it on a day when you have alot of time, or just figure you will add one section at a time over a period of a week or so.

(learned the hard way)

Ann Althouse said...

@Rose It's not about room for ads. The ads are at the top, so it doesn't matter. It's about the way the way I need to keep the whole template in the old html format and not switch to "layouts" or whatever it's called. I tried switching, it screwed up the formatting of my ads, so I went back. I won't try it again.

Yes, it was always alphabetical. But, even if the list started with Instapundit (an important blog in itself, and significant to Althouse) and Nina Camic (important to Althouse), the remainder of the last displayed list did not look as if it were organized in terms of, say, "Importance to Althouse." As I recall, several of even the first ten or so seemed odd men out.

And of course, all four of the Trooper Yorks disappeared. Extremely improbable that Trooper York might have gone from someone highly valued in the Althousian universe to a complete nonentity overnight.
