Optics.

This only worked for me the second time, when I got really close to the screen. It's really cool, so get close. You have to stare for a couple minutes, but it's fun afterwards:

I feel all oozy now.

I have a spinning disk that creates this illusion.

Peter Hoh said...

The physical disk that creates this illusion is the tri-zonal space warper.

That's a pretty cool illusion. When I started it, I kept thinking "I'm going to be pissed if this is one of those screaming monster tricks".

I fell asleep on my right arm in such a way as to cause me to wake up.. doing so i counted five fingers and thought it was odd.

You can see another version in this video, along with a few other classic optical illusions.

Here is a link to a full screen and I think higher resolution version. From The Corner.

That was exactly my thoughts too. Reminds me of some alleged indiscretions in my college days.

I didn't get it. What is supposed to happen? I tried it three times. What is the purpose of looking away at the end?

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

I didn't get it.

its ok.

we spend, to an irreparable extend (extent), more energy relaying, repeating (watch the video) what we already know than anything new worth discovering.

When you look away at the end, whatever it is you're looking at -- it helps if it's some distance away -- appears to be moving (or as Chip said, oozing) back and forth to the same rhythm as the moving lines in the video. The video programs your eyes to compensate for the moving lines and the program keeps running even after you look away from them. It's pretty cool.

my theory (and its not really, its cobbled) is that because of this inability to inherit 'consciousness' (as we understand it) as to be born fully conscious we have to create, compensate with illusions. we have to allude to what is escaping us at every turn.

as we get older we get better at recognizing our consciousness realizing that the people around us are just as adrift.

wv dibbla .. we are more conscious of things we imagine than what we imagine we know.

I watched about 30 seconds and was about to start screaming, when I decided to turn it off.

because of the illusory nature of what we believe to be consciousness itself.. the repetition is the cementation if you will of a reality we know to be ephemeral but because we repeat it we can make it our own somehow we can put a stamp on it...

and there by ... this is not a popular thought.. we try and make permanent things we (illusory) desire and wish for because they worked at some moment past.

im not saying we should not be doing waht we are doing! (misinterpretation is consciousness way of making sure we try and not stagnate)

I'm saying we should be.. yes having our own dinner with andre.

el amor is the best glimse of our contiousness we have.. so far

yes there math and science and things we know nothing about but the idea of doing something out of sheer love seems to work. its hooked its connected. it need not be repeated once its known. thre its something to it all i'm saying.

"Bad sex" would not be a reality otherwise.

"intimacy" is the biggest illusion we have cooked up for ourselves.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

give you my example, best evidence.. i cant enjoy sex unless i;m convinced i have seduced. truly found out a thing that goes on when its supposed to go on.

i might as well be a dinosaur. it is the reason i think i'm alone. i bet money on it.

there is a disconnect btwg what we tell each other in poems and song and the reality of "loving" someone.

i'm sure it will all be better tomorrow.

we are not as interested in where how and when as much as why.

its not as if im not "making progress" btw.

i felt better after washing the fridge.. (frankly i had no idea it was not clean until i set out to do it)

i really did.

Designers know that how we see the world is very different from how the world is. Has to be actually. Some of the coolest optical stuff is from the Purves lab at Duke.
