I think the guy actually did not want to kill the 278 people on board. He deliberately gave himself up. He must have gone to tamper with the explosives at the restroom which is why it malfunctioned, otherwise he had the opportunity to finish up his dirty job in the restroom. The security agents should explore this area and see whether the explosives were planted in the plane for him by somebody else which explained why he was not caught before boarding.
