"Damn, Obama looks like James Bond in this picture."

Says a commenter at the White House Flickr site. Is that what you see? Keep in mind that this is a picture the WH selected and had to have thought flattered the President and furthered his interests:

People who like Obama are blinded to the way other people see him. This picture strongly says cool to people who love him, but it doesn't read that way to others... including the many, many people who don't even want a cool President.

Photo via Instapundit, who has a closeup of the facial expression. The main thing I see when I look at that face is: He's tired.

Wouldn't it be funny, Barack, if, after all of this, you wake up one morning, and you think: I hate my job?

What's he thinking now? Oh, my God, I'm only one-quarter through this thing. And they're going to expect me to campaign again too? Bleh!

Prediction (longshot): Obama will not run for reelection. How can he do it? He can be all...
... I should not permit the Presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing... With America's sons in the fields far away, with America's future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world's hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office — the Presidency of your country. Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.
It can happen. It's happened. The man is tired and it's a way to get above it all. And that's the other thing I see in that face: He's tired and he's floating above it all.

what i see is the smug 'superiority' of the classic narcissist. he looks down his nose to everyone and his crossed-arms indicate that nobody, including his vp, can tell him anything that can pierce his self-contained wonderfulness.
however, it's amusing to note that, even after his moving and, of course, historic denouncement of the cheap and false patriotism of doing so, that he has a flag pinned to his tuxedo.

LOL. You defend Obama's legislative record as worthy of the White House by quoting Obama's own ad????

Woah, somebody stop those goalposts! Remember when you said: "Obama didn't run on his record as a legislator"? I know that was a long time ago - your previous post - but surely even you can remember, and defend one argument at a time?

You talk about Obama's stimulus package as if it was some kind of magical elixer

Hardly a "magical elixer" - just a piece of legislation that worked.

The stimulus did so much less than expected, many members of congress are calling for another one.

Right - it's the package that was such a failure people are clamoring for more.

But the summit of hilarity tonight is that you actually think "it's not about me" is a sincere expression of Obama's humility, not a focus-group approved applause line.

I'm still waiting for you to defend your original claim about the UN speech. Do you need me to repeat it for you, or can you find it above? You remember, the one where you claimed Obama's UN speech was "all about him"? You make so many contradictory arguments and shift the goalposts so often I know it's hard for you to keep track, but it's time for you to substantiate your claims.

If something happens to Gibbs, I think you could be a good new mouthpiece for him.

This must be your vaunted "independence" talking. Funny how it sounds exactly like belligerent know-nothingism.

Oh, I love how all of the douchebags came out of the woodwork for this one! "But... but... maybe a gnat flew into his eye and that's why he's... um... blinking... and the camera caught it!"

Hey, dimwits, Althouse's point was that President Obama's supporters are so blinded by adoration that they insist that an unflattering portrait is really in fact flattering.

Thanks for, y'know, proving her point.

Anyway, the real question posed by this photograph is whether or not it's racist to refer to a tuxedo as a "monkeysuit" in this context.

Speaking of racism... Yes, Fred4Pres, that photoshop of President Obama shining Palin's shoes is racist. Sorry. No, it doesn't matter that real live white people have also shined shoes for a living.

I am a longtime harsh critic of Obama, particularly on his origin of birth, and his ties to radical Islamists.

However, as a proud libertarian Republican, I gotta admit, the guy looks cool as a cat in that photo. And this is what we Republicans are up against most - the cool factor. Obama's got it. There's no denying it. And that's by far his greatest asset.

We can't beat him on that. We can only hope to match him. Fortunately we have one cool "Cat-tess" who can match him - Sarah Palin.

This is who I was reminded of by the above photo. http://tinyurl.com/592cud

Caption to the above photo link:

Obama: Joe, I need you to go down to the cement factory for me. Ask for Guido and tell him to give you the Jimmy Hoffa treatment, he'll know what I mean.

Biden: Jimmy Hoffa treatment?

Obama: Yeah.

Biden: Jimmy Hoffa treatment. Ask Guido to give me the Jimmy Hoffa treatment, he'll know what you mean. Gotcha boss! Anything I get pick up for you at the 7 Eleven on my way back?

Obama: You won't be.... uh, no.

Biden: Back in a flash!

I think his expression says (especially the closeup at Instapundit) "Joe you're a f%*$ing idot."

Of course that's after you make it past Joe's hair!

Chet, you have to learn to enjoy the commentariat here. Althouse sets forth [what they think is] red meat, they pounce. If your facts get in the way, they will present a new set. It's fun once you get the hang of it.

Really?

Seriously?

Why bother to use this picture as an excuse to suggest Obama not run in 2012? Just come out and say it; you don't like what Obama has done and don't want Obama to run in 2012.

Don't beat around the Bush.

I would be sympathetic to Obama's attitude, but then again, he picked him, he could have picked a Bayh, someone sensible, so he chose some one whose policy judgement is even more deficient than he. TARP was not used for the purposes it was approved
for, to staunch the river of distressed assets, but to favor pet firms, and to seize control of other institutions. The stimulus was a joke and half, funnelling money to nonexistent districts.

Ann says tired, I say "Lincolnesque." Someone positively spinning this pic could say that Obama already has so much gravity he could be chiseled into Mount Rushmore. I think Obama works hard at not revealing himself and that this picture says as little as he would want it to say.

The president evidently needs reading glasses...he's over forty when presbyopia can become a problem (a loss of elasticity in the lens) while looking at close objects. Joe Biden is standing quite close so the president is trying to focus on him. Maybe the president didn't have his glasses or didn't think they'd help in the near-dark. In an attempt to bring objects into focus, a person may squint, move their head forward and back, or tilting up and down, evidently the photographer caught such an attempt here.

I have more and more friends (as I age) with presbyopia and they give this same look to menus, friends when they first approach, and computer screens, usually just before they pull out the specs.

President Obama should take a little time from his schedule to get his eyes checked. They even have LASIK for this now which apparently works pretty well.

Hey, dimwits, Althouse's point was that President Obama's supporters are so blinded by adoration that they insist that an unflattering portrait is really in fact flattering.

And the counterpoint is that Ann is an idiot, with a long history of reading way more into photographs than is really there; that the photograph isn't particularly unflattering, unless you have a problem with a black man looking at a white man with an expression of anything but rapt deference - in which case, you're a bald racist.

Hey libs, remember when you guys were constantly saying bush looked like a monkey? Do a google search and you'll see plenty of discussion on how Bush looks like an idiot, a monkey and god knows what else. And now you're offended that people are suggesting (Gasp!!!) that Obama looks tired and smug?
Can you get any more thin skinned? You can dish it out but you can't take it. Waaaaaaa!!!

I think it's hysterical to watch the obots defend Obama by any means necessary. They used to hate it when the bushbots did that.

"A humble person would never claim to be humble. Someone who *was* humble would probably think they weren't terribly humble after all, and would cite as personal failings such things as pride and self-importance. But mostly a humble person wouldn't talk about him or herself. It really wouldn't come up."

Dammit! We missed our chance! Instead of holding an election, we should simply have asked McCain and Obama the following question: Do you think you're humble enough to be president?

The one who answered "Yes" would have thereby proven his UNWORTHINESS!

Shorter Youngblood - "it's unfair that any dismissal of Obama based on the color of his skin gets labeled 'racist'. I'm no racist! I just think no black man should be in authority over a white person. Some of my best friends are black - like the guy who shines my shoes!"

If your longshot pays off, it'll be one of the hottest predictions you ever made on the Intertubes.

His agenda between now & 2012 dwarfs those of the last two presidents put together - & he's trying to ram it through in the teeth of the worst economic decline in most Americans' living memory.

I remain baffled by people costantly wanting Obama to act more humble. He sure seemed to humble himself (quite badly, IMO) vis-a-vis Lieberman to pass a major HCR bill through the Senate.

Besides, a guy who graduates magna cum laude from Harvard Law & beats a strong favorite in a primary to then become POTUS (the Big Boss of all alpha males) acting meek & shoegazy would look pretty damn schizophrenic to me.

That's longer, fuckwit. And, also, you're also a really shitty troll. Step up your game or retire your bridge.

Obama has never completed anything he started, every political office he has held has been the springboard to the next office. Maybe he's just getting tired of playing the charade.

Humble is as humble does, Obama refers to himself in his speeches more than any President I can ever remember.

That's an incredibly clever point that I hadn't considered, and I'll give that all the reflection that it deserves, but you still haven't addressed my basic point - Ann is a fucking crazy person, who apparently hallucinates when she looks at photographs.
