Take care to clean the tubes as well as the bladder. I put up my pack with a still wet system and... green stuff grew.

Those hydration bladders are so danged convenient. And the Platypus brand is reasonably priced to replace the inserts on a rucksack after they get icky. I hope the weather here in the East becomes more hikable soon soon soon.

I also never get the kind where the neck is too small to be able to insert ice cubes and then fasten.

Cold is so good sometimes.

Beautiful. If I still had an office I'd buy a print of that from you.

I take the water container part out and put it in the freezer when I get home. Nothing grows.

This is a great picture. I thought it was a painting at first. Well done.

Ann, am I just imagining this or are you doing a lot more hiking, biking and kayaking than BM (before Meade)?

I love this photo! As a gear fetishist (is that a word?) and a hiker I felt more compelled to comment on this than the post about condoms and chestnuts....

P.s. To dry out your bladder after hiking, take a wire hanger, twist it up all 3-D like, and shove it in, then hang it up on the kitchen chandelier until the next morning....no green stuff!

Is hiking habit forming like endurance bicycling? In the Army, the hikes are not considered all that much fun. We do the Appalachian Trail down here, and it is more mountain climbing than hiking.

No matter how diligent you are, you'll get stuff growing in the tubes where you can't clean. Try to find a source of replacements (if any).

Meade has gotten her out of those dimly lit coffehouses and into the sunshine, which will undoubtedly add years to a much more fit life for Ann, and we get the dividend of all those great pictures.

That's why they were called forced marches.

Cool picture. It reminds me of Richard Estes and the photorealism painters.
