... you can be as hawkish as you like. Or dovish.

I am thirty-one today. I don't usually go shopping, but I did this morning with my mother. Dovish.

Now I'm going to the range to shoot guns. Hawkish.

Later I'm going out with friends for sushi. Eating of raw animals, hawkish.

Then we'll see Black Swan. Non-predatory bird in title, dovish.

Happy Birthday, Freeman Hunt!

The Blonde is very hawkish ("They only think they're endangered...") when it comes to the hawks cruising overhead while Sherlock is out.

Yes, many felicitations, Freeman

It was gong to be pistols, but the range is closed. I guess I've never tried to go on a Wednesday before. Que sera sera. Tomorrow maybe.

What an honor it must be to share a birthday with the great economist Ronald Coase. He turned 100 today.

Happy Birthday, Freeman!

In unrelated news, I went to see 127 Hours tonight. Even if you know what happens (and it's tough not to, given how widely his story has been broadcast), see it anyway.

It's not like some M. Night Shyamalan movie where it's supposed to be a surprise. It's a really brilliant film.

Red Tail Hawks are monogamous; so are Mourning Doves.

After reading about the Spring of a Thousand Bulbs coming to the Althouse, I felt a pang of envy. While at the garden center two weeks ago buying the tree, I came on bin of leftover tulip bulbs for 75% off, took a gamble and brought home a bagful. An impulse purchase based in vision and the faint hope we still might experience enough of a thaw to get them in the ground before the really cold stuff sets in. With 49 degree temperatures predicted for Friday, this just might happen. Not the ideal way to plant bulbs but I will consider whatever goes in, good enough; whatever comes up, blessing.

We have a pair of Cooper's hawks who live in our space. Or we in theirs.

They are part of the family ebb and flow around here.

Happy birthday Freeman!

Wow! Thank you, thank you for all the birthday wishes. They are much appreciated.

Black Swan, by the way, was not dovish. It was hawkish. Quite.

"Red Tail Hawks are monogamous; so are Mourning Doves."

Can that possibly be true, MamaM?

I heard Hawks and Doves were merely bound to a series of one-at-a-time relationships that they continue to call "monogamous".

Ha ha One at a time...OVER AND OVER...

But perhaps we quibble to avoid squabbling about such things?

MamaM said...

Zoological definition of monogamy: having only one mate during a breeding season or during the breeding life of a pair.

Red Hawks generally mate for life but will obtain another mate if one dies. They have a life span of 21 years compared to the 4-5 years allotted to doves, whom they eat for lunch.

Quibble is a great word. I used to think it was the same as squabble until I encountered Harry Potter and The Quibbler, and found out it involves something more: To evade the truth or importance of an issue by raising trivial distinctions and objections.
