People hate cross country skiing. They prefer to drive.

But I have to pay for the grooming expenses and land purchases like the Ice Age Trail, for $2.6 million dollars, whether I like it or not.

ty is right. Imagine spending time with your mate being active in the sunlight, when you could be sitting in the dark passively absorbing a movie. I don't see how skiing stimulates the economy, either, once the skis have been bought.

Some people just can't wait to start walking with canes.

A walk in the park on cross-country skis, but skiing it ain't!

skiing it ain't!

Not gravity-powered skiing -- no motors, no lift tickets -- but muscle-powered skiing.

It's skiing, for sure, but it looks like a lot of work!

@Meade: Is there still cross-country skiing at Owen Park? Nice view of the city from there.

25 years ago, there was trail there that included a gentle downslope through the trees which led to a small footbridge (no handrails) over a frozen creek. You had just a few seconds to decide to cross it or to balk. It was a great test of confidence and skill. Just don't get all Sonny Bono).

There used to be good skiing over at Olin Park (also with wooded hills and great views across Lake Monona).

Finally an occasion to dress up.

Beautiful sky. So glad it will be coming our way.

I like the skirt. She looks fetching in it.

Ann Althouse said...

I prefer the skirt. I was wearing leggings and thick fleece pants, because it was so cold — 10°. But actually, skiing, it felt hot. I could have dressed more lightly.

Penny said...

It seems like just yesterday when Althouse bought those skis and that beautiful jacket.

Time! It flies by when you aren't cross country skiing.

It's all relative. Compared to walking or snowshow'ing, X-country is low labor indeed.

Rh, Miss Vickie looks equally as lovely in her multi-colored dog biscuit jacket.

Or maybe they're colorful bowties?

Coketown said...

Didn't the photographer get pissed that you kept skiing into his shots? If that was me, I'd be all, like, "WTF Ann? Quit skiing into the frame!" The first one is my favorite--of the...two. "Ah! A sweeping, majestic snowscape, accented with delicate trees lineating toward an empty swath of--WTF ANN?!"

k*thy said...

I love how much you don't have to wear when you do that. Hope ypu were wearing sunglasses...

Looks like a nice night for a run, too.

deborah said...

DS, I was wondering about snow-shoeing...that would be a work-out.

And if I were Althouse, I might suggest you turn around for your next best shot and a swift kick in your butt.

garage mahal -

This looks like Odana Hills (though I have a hard time finding hills worthy of being called hills there), so it's a park that has been around for a long time and collects money from those who choose to cross-country ski. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. This will not add to Scott Walker's ever-expanding deficit.

16 where we are, so I don't blame you a bit. Any exposed flesh really feels it in a hurry.

Stay warm and safe.

Every time I see Scott Walker's name I reach for a drink. Happy Heron Pale Ale it happens to be this time.

Hey, at least garage is drinking a Wisconsin brew. We should all imbibe local spirits and beverages until this storm passes.

Prof, since you are the best lawyer. How about sharing your views on Rahm's residence hearings in chicago? I suspect this is a farce, just like Blumenthal in CT and Cuomo in NY. Rahm is going to be the Mayor. No one can stop him. Yet, I wonder if this is right. Can people with power simply use legal tactics, media, and army of volunteers to get what they want? Is this what the Democratic Party stands? What does it tell about the GOP or others who have no back-bone? This Chicago story is so sad and it is troubling that it is not being discussed in the media. Your thoughts?

Crap, bad link...try again:

Althouse, Do you know about fleece lined leggings? They are wonderful, just the right weight and warmth to wear under a long skirt in the winter. Plush makes fleece lined thigh highs and a denim model that has Jeans style top stitching and back pockets! They look great with my Fry cuff-top boots...or those cool booties you bought rcently

This is really one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" products.

Penny said...

"Prof, since you are the best lawyer."

Oh?

Great teacher, yeah. But seriously, you want to take Althouse to court as YOUR defense attorney?

You're kidding, right?

You look hot out there. I would do a double take def.

But weren't you cold? It was like 10 out today.

"Ugh, more sports. Yet another brilliant, crisp winter day, meant for contemplation and solitude, ruined by physical culture."

The skiing is as leisurely as you want, and the opportunity for contemplation is as good as you have while walking... better, actually, because it's less jarring. You glide along....

It's not like downhill skiing where gravity determines your speed. More like walking/running. And I'm doing it for the pleasure and beauty, not for some grim shape-up program.

Titus said...

My father has two Polaris snowmobiles.

I think I am going to snowmobile.

I am so red state now.

Ann Althouse said...

"You look hot out there. I would do a double take def."

Thanks, Tit.

"But weren't you cold? It was like 10 out today."

My face and my feet got a little cold at first, but I had more of a problem of getting too hot!

Ann Althouse said...

"Althouse, Do you know about fleece lined leggings? They are wonderful, just the right weight and warmth to wear under a long skirt in the winter."

I had fleece-lined leggings, but not as comfy as the ones you linked to.

Titus said...

This time of the year I think of Stowe....

Instead now I have some lousy ski "resort" to go to in Portage Wisconsin.

No, I am not going to complain. I am sure it will be fab-not.

My mom made Tom and Jerry's tonight. I believe that is very Red State too. I really am assimilating.

Now this is how to celebrate winter in Wisconsin!

Ann Althouse said...

@edh Those trails are groomed by machine and you're required to stay on the trail. You can't go cutting your own trail.

Palladian said...

"You can't go cutting your own trail."

How very Madison!

Forward, indeed! If you stray in any other direction, you'll be arrested!

Chip Ahoy said...

Lurvly. But why are you standing still? Oh, you're not.

People were walking around here wearing short sleeves today. They are a bit nuts. I, however, am sensible and wore long sleeves.

Know what would be great after a nice day of skiing? A big bowl of steaming mussels, that's what.

Clyde said...

I'm glad to see that people up in the land of ice and snow are sensible enough not to wear shorts in cold weather. Here in Florida, it is down below freezing outside, and yet some of the people I work with are in complete denial and still wearing shorts! Not me, not in the winter. Don't need frostbitten knees, thank you kindly.

MadisonMan said...

How very Madison!

That was my reaction too.

Midwesterners are pretty rule-abiding though. As this XC trail is on a golf course, I'm guessing they don't want people skiing on the greens.
