I receive a threat: "whoever video taped this has no life and needs to be shot in the head."

That's a comment on my YouTube video about the salt trucks that circled the Wisconsin Capitol yesterday, blowing horns, apparently in support of the protesters. (I blogged the video here.)

Coincidentally, last night, one of my readers sent this email to the Madison Street Superintendent:
I work in Madison, so I was delighted to read on madison.com this morning that the snow plows were out "the moment" precipitation began today.

You might want to double check whether those plows were pouring salt, however, or whether the drivers were more interested in showing their support for anti-Walker ralliers:

http://althouse.blogspot.com/2011/02/madison-city-salt-trucks-circle-capitol.html
The Street Superintendent responded:

I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention. While it was necessary with the storm system we had yesterday to have crews working the overtime to be salting and plowing our main streets, we never should have had the trucks involved in the rally around the Capitol.

We are checking our GPS and determining the what operators were involved and will be dealing with this.

While people are free to rally and support whatever cause they believe in, it should not be done at the expense of the taxpayers such as you and I.

I thank you again,

Al Schumacher
Street Superintendent

Meh. Your whole "been there done that" routine is tiresome.

I think after the Giffords shooting you have to take these threats with a modicum of seriousness. Every so-called progressive is a Jared Lochner waiting to happen and you never know what kind of comment will set them off. It is quite possible that the Daily Kos diarist who wrote "my congresswoman is dead to me" might have been the trigger for Lochner to go on his shooting rampage. So certainly Professor Althouse needs to be careful around crowds and perhaps think about carrying some form of self protection. She might not get shot but certainly now that she has been id-cd some form of physical violence may be directed against her.

oh strike that. I was momentarily blinded by your coolness.

Yes, even this former Marine is impressed with your tough guy schtick...

Of course. For the Left, it's always "Civility for thee, but not for me!"

Fuck, Fen, I was just going to tell you how much you were cracking me up.

Sorry I'm cowering like the rest of you but, yea, my upbringing's different. I talk about shit from experience - like NewAge killings and how libs sabotage shit for conservatives at work - that y'all just read and speculate on. I've said - too many times - I wonder what planet you live on. Now I know:

You're from The Land of Ungrateful Cowards.

Cool Althouse~ you have managed to make it all about
YOU...taking a page from ole Sarah Paalin's playbook.
Whip up your base some more, they are almost forming stiff peaks.

What a douche. Someone else makes death threats and this idiot is so indoctrinated his brain can only perceive that the person receiving it must be at fault.

Here's a lesson to students trying to wade through the morass: don't end up like this fool.

The Crack Emcee said...

That should've read "Sorry I'm NOT cowering like the rest of you,..."

Hi Fen. Sock it to me.

Crack,

Don't take this personally, but you're coming off like a punk-assed mother fuckin bitch.

Shanna said...

Is it good to report it? Sure

Exactly. That’s all. It’s not a big deal and is probably in fact nothing, but under the “people who say crazy stuff are occasionally in fact crazy” theorem it might be wise to get it on file.

Now I really don't know what you guys are talking about because, if this was happening in Cali, not only would I be more worried

All I meant is a threat from your neighbor is more likely to be an actual threat than a threat from some dude who lives a thousand miles away. I didn’t mean if all this Madison stuff was happening in California.

Proximity matters in threat assessment, is all I'm saying.

Crack I think that you are on to something, as though some folks want violence to happen and are over-reacting-- perhaps as I did a few days ago to some of the violent language used by bloggers on this site, a fairly common thing. But given that off-duty police are now joining the protest, I think things will stay calm.

Is ". . . and needs to be shot in the head" a death threat? What about (with apologies to Henry II) "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest(ess)?"

Ann, please stay out of cathedrals for a while.

Crack -- You don't think I should carry? Then I don't think you ought to write because you seem completely unqualified to express an intelligent thought.

Your opinion matters to nobody, and least of all to me. Oh by the way, I'm probably the least jumpy person you'll ever meet.

It will be instructive to see what happens to a city employee who makes a death threat against a city resident...

Mrs. Whatsit: the professor characterized that remark as a threat. I don't recall she characterized the parallel remark (that someone should rape a certain Jill) as a threat.

You just haven't lived until you've had at least one of the following directed at you:
"You ought to be shot"

"It's the cops, let's get out of here!"

"Hi, you don't know me, but I think you knew my mom. . . ."

"Fucking pussies"

A perfectly fine thing to do. I heartily recommend it.

Interesting how a lefty, [is he smoking] Crack Emcee, is the first to use a misogynist remark.

So the thugs are bringing in muscle. Par for the course.

From the looks of this soft little man with his Captain Kangaroo haircut and doughy hands and face, I'd say there's not much to worry about from him.

The panther-head-with-batwings tattoo has to be ironic. It's like a tat of an eagle fighting a snake as it slithers through the eyesockets of a skull, plastered on the chest of Opee from The Andy Griffith Show.

I'd be more concerned about his coworkers. Better to have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it.

You can contact the authorities, but they're not going to put the guy, or his coworkers, under round-the-clock surveillance. I'd recommend a nice relaxing trip to the range with Meade. Most the women in my family have participated in the shooting sports of one kind or another; you might be surprised how much you enjoy it, assuming you've never tried it.

S&W makes some dandy weapons specifically for smaller hands.

autothreads, Crack is hardly a lefty. I'll not argue about a little misogyny on his part, though.

Crack is generalizing from personal experience. It would only take one good woman, I'm guessing, for him to change his attitudes.

Indeed, as Althouse and many of her lemmings er posters are quite the drama queens.

The over-the-top me me me meme which has made fixednoise the #1 ad nauseam, cable news media minutia network. hmm, maybe Ann can get her own show on fixed as their standards are quite low eh ~ billo, hannity, beck, malkin, mama grizzly, turdblossom, and their new correspondent, ann althouse ...

She can sell her own factor gear like billo lol.

Y'all have a nice day!

Okay, who spilled the troll chow?

There is no reasoning with people who are only here to score points with their fellow travelers.

Perhaps it's time to wield the Althousian weapons of choice: satire and ridicule?

Wow, Ann, you're almost a martyr for free speech! Cool! And nobody can accuse you of incivility.

Unions are neither good nor bad. It's all about how they're being used. When they become monopoles of the labor market, they are as bad as business monopolies.

But please don't tell me you were Army!

Fen,

Sincerely, I wasn't trying to be "been there done that", I just didn't know how to make this point online without giving you some personal experience.

AllenS,

You're coming off like a punk-assed mother fuckin bitch.

Avoid blacks. LOL

roesch-voltaire,

Crack I think that you are on to something, as though some folks want violence to happen and are over-reacting-- perhaps as I did a few days ago to some of the violent language used by bloggers on this site, a fairly common thing.

It is, but it's still just over-the-top name calling. Did you hear? Scott Walker's a "Nazi".

A "Shotgun" Gold,

I don't think you ought to write because you seem completely unqualified to express an intelligent thought.

You're new around here. Look and learn. This is my fam.

autothreads,

Interesting how a lefty, [is he smoking] Crack Emcee, is the first to use a misogynist remark.

1) I ain't PC.

2) That ain't misogynist, it's colloquial. When are you idiots going to learn what a misogynist is? I'm convinced you're so used to crying "wolf" you wouldn't know one if he/she actually showed up.

Pastafarian,

autothreads, Crack is hardly a lefty.

You tell 'em! Are they accepting donations to put Bush's head on Mt. Rushmore yet?

former law student,

Crack is generalizing from personal experience. It would only take one good woman, I'm guessing, for him to change his attitudes.

You might be right - but I ain't marrying the bitch! ROTFLMAO!!!

Fen,

Please don't tell me you were Army!

Naw, a fireman in the Navy. I wish, now, I had been a Marine. [salute]

AllenS said...

We used to tell jokes about people in the Navy.

Fen said...

Naw, Navy is cool. We had docs attached to our Battalion - no Marine training but there they were anyway, out there on the FEBA with us, unarmed and dodging bullets while they held an IV bag up high in the air (skylining) as they tended wounded troops. That takes balls.

mrs whatsit said...

FLS: she did call it a threat, and she provided the text so that the rest of us could decide whether we agree with her. As I said before, it's close enough to the edge that even if it doesn't technically qualify, I think treating it as a threat is wise. Also as I said before -- and as you didn't deny -- I suspect that if such language were directed at you, by someone who knows your name and other identifying information, because you had made public statements on an incendiary local issue in your own name -- I suspect you'd have no trouble at all perceiving it as a threat.

Really Crack? My first post was from over a year and a half ago. Not that new! And I don't care if you've been here a day or a decade. I only care if you make sense. You fail.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin is not a concealed carry state. Perhaps that's something the Wisconsin legislature can take up while the Dumbocrats are out of town?

Thanks to Meade and his love of cross-country skiing the Professor appears to be fairly strong, but even so I think the Mossberg will be a bit much for her, DBQ. I think a 20 ga. Stoeger coach gun will be easier for her to handle. Pointed in the general direction of someone with mayhem on his mind it should provide adequate incentive for the fellow to reconsider.

Or the Professor could consider something chambered in 9mm short (.380 ACP). The round gives less kick than a normal 9mm, making it easier to control. The Sig Sauer P238 is a good choice, but if you can find a Walther PPK chambered in 9x17, that works too -- and would let you, Professor, imagine yourself as a Bond girl.

;-)
