Obama spoke on the debt crisis again tonight, and Boehner spoke too.

I'd say Boehner won. Here are the President's remarks. His favorite word was compromise:
... I’ve told leaders of both parties that they must come up with a fair compromise in the next few days that can pass both houses of Congress -– and a compromise that I can sign.  I’m confident we can reach this compromise.  Despite our disagreements, Republican leaders and I have found common ground before.  And I believe that enough members of both parties will ultimately put politics aside and help us make progress.
I don't believe he believes that. Is he putting politics aside?
... [D]o you know what people are fed up with most of all?

They’re fed up with a town where compromise has become a dirty word....

The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for a dysfunctional government.  So I’m asking you all to make your voice heard.  If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of Congress know.  If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message.

America, after all, has always been a grand experiment in compromise.
I had to stop and think: Is America really about compromise? I thought of the Missouri Compromise. And the Three-Fifths Compromise. Maybe compromise is a dirty word for a good reason!

Here's Boehner's speech. Excerpt:
I want you to know I made a sincere effort to work with the president to identify a path forward that would implement the principles of Cut, Cap, & Balance in a manner that could secure bipartisan support and be signed into law. I gave it my all.

Unfortunately, the president would not take yes for an answer. Even when we thought we might be close on an agreement, the president's demands changed.

The president has often said we need a "balanced" approach -- which in Washington means: we spend more... you pay more. Having run a small business, I know those tax increases will destroy jobs.
ADDED: "Obama refuses to sign short-term debt-ceiling hike, said DC raised 18 times under Reagan. How long-term were those?"

An article in Kiplinger's this month suggests that trimming social security and medicare by 7% would fix the deficit in ten years time.

This of course would be anathema for Obama and the Dems.

If Obama is reelected we will have 25 trillion dollars in debt by the end of his second term. And still the liberal journalists will get a thrill up their legs when they think of Obama and his intelligence.

The Republicans are compromising. Obama wants to raise the debt ceiling so he can continue his spending binge. The Repulicans don't want to, but are willing to compromise and give him his raise if he agrees to policies which begin to slow the debt increase. Sounds like compromise to me.

That will make a powerful ad for his challenger.

"Did anyone here actually watch Obama?"

I couldn't (I turned the sound off). I can't stand him, anymore.

Thank God he was back on millionairesandbillionaires and their jet planes.

Because I hope that every stinking little shit that works in private aviation is fired. They shouldn't work for the man, they should go to work for the govt where they could do some real good. The govt needs to get these assholes on the dole so they will quit using their skills to maintain and service the rides of millionairesandbillionaires.

Every citizen ought to pay some federal income tax. The poorest of the poor ought to have to come out of pocket a hundred bucks every year. That hundred dollars would be adjusted upwards and downwards with the rise and fall of taxes. That little tweak would change everything.

50% don't pay federal income tax. Debt has reached 100% of GDP (and even that is fudging the books by not accounting for unfunded SS and MediCare liabilities). We are in very dangerous territory. It boggles my mind that so many don't see that.

But Micheal Moore says we're not broke.

Barack Obama is running on empty.

Anyone with half a brain now knows that calls to "compromise" and to "put politics aside," coming from Barack Obama, mean "do it my way."

I mean, he's sitting in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, so who will believe him when he once again tries to define himself against "Washington"?

I hadn't thought of John Boehner as a great orator, but he clearly won last night's exchange.

I'm done with the faux-naïve 36fs, but it's worth noting that in the 1950s, when the top income tax rates were confiscatory, the actual percentage of GDP taken by the Feds was around 18. Pretty much the same as under Reagan, Clinton, even most of Dubya's time in office.

And I saw a good point made, on another blog, about Democrats in the Senate. How many of those who are up for reelection in 2012 are actually going to vote for raising income tax rates?

Harry Reid devoutly wants the rate increase. Is Joe Manchin going to vote to give it to him? Claire McCaskill? Sherrod Brown, even?

... Median American household net greater than $232,000?....

Or another way to ask this:

After working for 40-odd years, owning your own home which should be free & clear AFTER 40 years,

why DON'T you have a net worth of more than $232K?

He did, my mom is, we're telling the kids no - we're saving for retirememnt so U don't have to support us.

Claire McCaskill?

If she does, it will be because she's already done the political calculus that's shown she has no viable option to re-election. She's in deep shit here in Missouri and she knows it. When she goes on usually friendly radio here in STL, she's being assailed on all sides with questions about her votes this term and doesn't do very well in responding to them.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I'd count MO swapping isle sides.

I had a young canvaser come to my door a couple of weeks ago, looking for money to fund recall election campaigns. She was so proud of the fact that her organization was the one that brought Michael Moore to Madison during the recent kerfuffle.

hmmm--213 comments and for the most part our residents lefties haven made an appearance--most interesting.

Since I dont have a TV and dont listen to Mr Obama, from the various clips floating around, it looks like the speaker kicked Mr Obamas half black ass

Mr Boeheer needs to get on TV more; and while he did sublimally, he simply needs to call the president a liar--straight talk usually works better than artificial niceties.

Boehner did well last night, but as a whole I've been quite disappointed in his debating skills. They need to put Paul Ryan out there more.

I couldn't disagree more, Ann. I thought that Boehner was whinny and childish. My husband, who is a staunch Republican, was afraid he was going to burst in to tears at any moment.
