On bunga bunga, you might want to check out the Emperor Tiberius on Capri.

As to the Amazons, as he called them, they're lucky if they're working weekends at the Athens Hooters.

If not, like their boss, they may have been Mussolinied.

I saw this ad from Manhattan Mini Storage on the subway today. Anyone who lives in New York and uses the MTA is probably familiar with Manhattan Mini Storage's preening, provincial, community-college-sophomore-clever ads, which supposedly flog their overpriced junk-dumping units but lately seem to be DNC/douchebag liberal talking points with storage unit branding. They take shots at "fly-over" America, Republicans, Christianity... the usual targets of "brave" dissenters everywhere. I suppose the idea is to either elicit a self-satisfied sense of sameness in the average New York douchebag that makes them want to rent an overpriced storage unit and deposit their boxes of soiled panties and yellowed Rod Mckuen paperbacks therein, like inserting stale, unwanted memories into some giant middle-class metropolitan liberal id.

The funny thing about this tactic is that the ads continually remind me never to do business with Manhattan Mini Storage as long as I live. I'd sooner shovel my junk into a storm drain than give my business to someone who thinks that insulting potential clients, and stereotyping what is in reality a city full of diverse viewpoints, is a clever marketing tactic.

It's especially amusing since I don't even like Rick Perry at all. In fact he grosses me out. But something about the insulting assumptions implied by the ad make me want to wear a Rick Perry pin out of spite.

On waste management and the proper disposal of dictators: I just saw a video of Qaddafi having the worst day and last moments of his life. His face was bloody, and he looked dazed. Someone had removed Qaddafi's shoe and was striking him with it. Qaddafi raised his arm in an old man's way to ward off the blows. The crowd around him was shouting Allah Akbar, but they looked like a lynch mob....With dictators I'm of the opinion that the more squalid the death the better. But this was disturbing to look at. It seemed too cruel, too ugly. A crowd this ugly usually ends up with someone like Qaddafi as their leader. Qaddafi didn't deserve a decent death, but this doesn't augur well for the future.

Those were some crazy-ass Arabs. I hope we don't get involved with any more "nation building." Let the Europeans toss their treasure down that rat hole for a change.

I'm of mixed feelings of the proper disposal of dictators. I don't like the idea of giving them one last chance to demonstrate their heroic leadership by making brave statements at their trials. See the Milosovic and Saddam trials. Such trials mock the rule of law. On the other hand, a brutish death such as Mussolini and Qaddafi suffered seems too intense and abrupt and teaches the next madman the wrong lesson. Hitler's suicide? That also seems wrong. It gives him too much control of his own fate. Couseceau:: A fifteen minute secret trial followed by an execution. Here again, something doesn't seem right. The punishment is exemplary but not the process of justice.....Perhaps some crimes are so grave and grand that they dwarf the ordinary processes of crime and punishment.

William said...

And, of course, very few dictators suffer any punishment at all. Stalin and Mao died in their beds, content with a life well lived. Some Congolese dictator also died in his bed, but with an empty bottle of viagra and several high priced hookers in attendance. It's good to be the king, but even better to be the dictator. Mass murder has been decriminalized. Most of these dead tyrants are the exception rather than the rule.

What I saw at #OWS today in NYC:

https://picasaweb.google.com/101449979670849839330/OccupyWallStreetOctober202011OWS

A few things I noticed. There seemed to be a East/West divide within the park. Sketchier people seemed to be congregating on the west side while, dare I say, wealthier kids seemed to be hanging out on the east side.

There were lots of curious onlookers snapping photos (such as myself) and lots of members of the press.

The whole thing had a carnival atmosphere -- lots of side-shows.

The crowd seemed to be mostly made up of people in the 20's and people north of 60.

Thanks for taking the time to talk about this, I’m fervently about this and I appreciate studying this topic. Please, while you gain information, please update this web site with increased information. I’ve found it very helpful. There must be charging stations everywhere.

As long as Dr Evil has interests in danger and there's an easy dictator or bad guy GodZero thinks he can knock off without it turning into Mogadishu, it'll continue.

Of course, Willie thought it would be a piece of cake to knock off Aidid with Reagan's military (before he cut it by 40% in the name of the "peace dividend"), too.

Disagree.

If they want to rant, let 'em. The record will speak louder. What happened to Khadaffy was the mob at its worst. He should have been extradited and tried for Lockerbie.

And, of course, very few dictators suffer any punishment at all. Stalin and Mao died in their beds, content with a life well lived.

Also disagree.

Stalin died as he lived, paranoid to the end, scared Beria was coming for him - there's speculation his death wasn't entirely, uh, natural. Mao had a similar problem with the Gang of Four.

I saw an interview yesterday on Fox News with the mother of a young woman who was killed in the Pan Am 103 bombing back in 1988. She was jubilant about Qaddafi's death. None of that false "any man's death diminishes me" bullcrap; she was glad he was dead, she was glad that he suffered and only wished that he had suffered more. I can't say that I blamed her for her non-PC reaction. She had reason enough, living with that loss for almost 23 years.

It's been a bad year for Muslim terrorists and thugs, like 1934 was for American gangsters. Bin Laden, Awlaki, Qaddafi (or however you want to spell it), not to mention the other dictators swept from their lifetime sinecures. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving group of people.

And slightly off on a tangent, I saw one of those "memorial" decals on the back window of a minivan the other day, memorializing "our beloved grandson" with birth and death dates in March 1980 and March 2003 respectively (nothing to indicate military, so probably not Iraq war related). The unfortunate young man died three days short of his 23rd birthday. I just wonder how psychologically healthy it is to have a reminder like that on the back of your van eight years later. Isn't it better to move on?

Clyde-
I wonder the same thing when i see those memorial stickers on cars. We all will experience loss at some point. I would never be inclined to "advertise" my loss on a bumber sticker although everyone grieves differently i suppose.

IMMEMORIOWL

I glimpsed two mating owls
A glimpstant after they caught peeping me.
Away they wide winged through treetops thick
For more keen preening and hoo-hoo-hooings.
When with zesty nesty egg lust they ruffle hot
These wise woods ones turn foul fowls.
Bird watchers know they grow territoriowl
About the shy high spot where their love squats.
They glower, dive on joggers, walkers, tots
With talons slashing quite an awfowl lot.
Such tempermentowls!
But I cannot condemn them or be too judgementowl.
Their love is lasting, transcendentowl,
Not the least flighty or experimentowl.
For wee owlets need far-sighted parentowl
Guides to pass on feathery fundamentowls.
When after many harvest moons have gone gentowl
Our paired off preds make no jealous flap
To the sunset they mousy muffled fade,
Laying antique beaks on each other’s cheek
To the end, friends, ever sentimentowl.

No, such trials fulfill and abide by the rule of law. Summary execution without benefit of a trial violates and makes mock of the rule of law.

KCFleming said...

The mere existence of a dictator mocks the rule of law.

And a trial for such evil further mocks the rule of law, as most such evil is carried out without explicit ties to the man in charge. All is verbal, coded, or simply understood. Hitler would have been 'acquitted' by a jury composed of Cook and other lefties. Where's the smoking gun for his genocidal plan?

Summary execution is the best approach, and far more civilized than being killed by a grotesque mob like Qaddafi.

Clyde,

Perhaps after eating Soma (Brave New World conceptual Soma not the current drug) everyday to feel "better" the people with the deceased grandchild need the reminder on their vehicle so, just for a second of two, they remember their offspring.

Even if it doesn't help them to "move on" from the pain to do so.

In any event, I'm certain Dr. Drew would agree with you, so there's that.

Just read on the LA Times web site that California's Air Resources Board unanimously voted to enact Cap-and-Trade in that state.

Most of the commenters there see the folly in it. They might as well have just called it De-industrialize California, because that would be the end result if followed to its logical conclusion.

Clyde said...

I guess somebody should have told them that Dies The Fire was a novel, not a blueprint! (Besides, California did NOT fare well in that book!)

Great Horned Owls! My absolute favorite. Looks like you were near the Eagle Heights area of the Lakeshore Path. There are quite a few of them that live in those woods. I've still never been able to see any of them, but I've heard them many times. Hauntingly beautiful.
