Knees together, panties in a twist... or: Do you want Friess with that?

A right-wing geezer who doesn't know how to tell a groaner of an old joke confuses some lefty bloggers who don't know what they've just heard.  The joke, as phrased by Santorum's best billionaire friend, Foster Friess, was:
Back in my day, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.
Alex Seitz-Wald at ThinkProgress is all:
Given that Aspirin is not a contraceptive, Friess seems to be suggesting that women keep the pill between their knees in order to ensure they legs [sic] stay closed to prevent having sex. Conspicuously, Friess doesn’t put the same burden on men.
I love the way he [she?] throws in the cursory feminist analysis to offset his plodding getting of the joke.

Michael Falcone at ABCNews's The Note, is stuck under the embarrassing headline "Santorum's Top Super  PAC Donor Suggests Women Should Use Aspirin For Contraception." Falcone soberly delivers the news that it's a joke: "He smiled as he said it, but wasn’t laughing. The remark alludes to an old joke about abstinence."

Aspirin's not a contraceptive, but have you heard about Coca-Cola? Back in my day...
Coke (and Dr Pepper in the southern States) douches have been part of contraceptive lore at least since the 1950s, with the common belief being that the carbonic acid in Coke killed the sperm and "exploded" the sperm cells, while the carbonation of the drink forced the jet of liquid into the vagina....
That is, after intercourse, you shake up the bottle, stick it in, and let it shoot up in there! If you think that's stupid, check over the home remedies you think work, all your "holistic" and "alternative" things.

The last several elections have been about driving out your base (also known as the Rove strategy, which Plouffe/Axelrod picked up on as well).

Energizing your base, while dampening your opponents, has been as equal, if not more important than, winning over moderates. Which is what hurt McCain so much (his base was depressed), while Obama was able to keep his base from fracturing, despite the nomination battle with Hillary. Same with Bush v. Kerry; Bush did not win, Kerry lost.

At least, that's conventional wisdom at the moment. I think it'll be a few more years before we know for sure.

Andrea Mitchell is 65 years old, Friess is only five years older. Mitchell had surely heard this joke before.

Yet Mitchell, Chris Mathews [64 years old], etc will report this story and slant it by suggesting Friess is a very ancient fossil.

I would be happy to engage with them phx. No problem. I would simply ask if they truly felt it was necessary that their purchase of birth control be subsidized by the Federal government?

That's a great question.
I would also ask them if they are comfortable with groups giving large campaign contributions in an effort to make sure their pet causes get covered by insurance with zero co-pay.
The government has virtually no interest in keeping insurance costs down, because employers and employees have to bear the cost. On top of that, the government has an interest in driving insurance costs up because of the "Cadillac" policy tax.
But if they can market themselves as "caring" about a certain group they seek the goodies for, they have a lot to benefit from politically by doing so.

So I would ask moderates if they see themselves in the middle of a potential financial pincer that they've no way to get out of.

Santorum:

“You know, [reporters] sit there and they say nothing, while for 20 years [President Obama] sits in a church with a guy who is a racist,” Santorum says. “And somehow or another Foster Friess is now who I am? This is just crap.”

“I went at Charlie Rose this morning a little bit for bringing this stuff up,” he says. “They want to talk about contraception. This is how the media wants to frame me. We have to go out there and keep pounding away.”

Good for him.

@phx,
The wiki article on her is so long, the point I was trying to make is that I think you are taking your view and projecting it to all moderates/independents. That might not be accurate, because "moderate" often depends on where you stand, and which way you face.
Personally, I think the fact that you are participating in the conversation means you aren't a moderate/undecided. And from your opinions, I'd say you are fairly solidly on the left/liberal, but not in danger of slipping into any views as extreme left as FireDogLake or PETA. But maybe Feministing...

But that's just my opinion.
You made your prediction, I've made a few, and I hope you return in the mid-Nov aftermath discussions to eat your crow.

remember when everybody had little question marks floating over their heads when, at the debate, georgie repeatedly asked about contraception as an issue? looks like he just got the script a little early because here we are all in a tizzy about who has the better position(so to speak)on preventing pregnancies. what the heck happened to making this an election about the economy, smaller government, and individual liberty?

"What does this have to do with a prescription? My point is that many women can't use the cheapest pills available because of the side effects for them. Some women have to use much more expensive birth control pills."

Because the pill is dangerous and bad for you. It messes with your natural, healthy, systems and jerks your hormones around.

OTOH, all a doctor does is give you a prescription to whatever pill they happen to prefer for whatever reason. It's not as though there is a test or examination involved to figure out which one you should have. You only find out that when you go back and complain you're spotting or turn into femzilla from them.

It's a high price women pay so that society can enjoy free fucking.

"Undecideds/leanings/and moderate women are going to be needed by the GOP in November.

And the more the social conservative wing of the GOP gets their agenda out in front of the public, the more they look to the Dems.
"

How is this a social conservative issue? It's a libertarian issue. It's a small government issue. It's a freedom of religion issue.

It's a liberty issue.

Now, sure, people need votes but ought I give up my liberty to get them? What's the point of that? Let the Democrat get elected and be done with it.

Synova said...

"We know who supports women voters."

This is another case (or the same case?) of the train having left the station a long, long, time ago.

Republican women, and absolutely libertarian women, are and have been subject to the democrat's claim that their politics are female politics and we're already well accustomed to our second class sisterhood.

If a woman was not convinced before, will she suddenly be convinced now?

I'm an adult. I don't need a Daddy. Leave me alone.

Why shouldn't prostitution be legal? well. Saint Agustine and Saint thomas tought that prostitution was public service . it was the equivalent of the well in a ship. And was the best way to avoid homosexuality. See The government of a christian prince
