Romney and Ryan try to avoid the distraction of Akin's idiotic "legitimate rape" remark.

And this is a nice break for Obama and Joe "put y'all back in chains" Biden.

What morsel of moronicness is next on the menu of debased American politic?

And speaking of stupidity:

It's the economy, stupid.

Suggestion: until the 9 Philosopher Kings appointed with lifetime tenure on the SCOTUS agree to restore the death penalty for rapists that they forbade 20 years ago, then a death penalty for offspring of rapists needs to be shown an equal mercy.

But the best answer is leaving it up to the mother. No one else has found another answer to rape pregnancy.

Since Jay is an idiot and constantly posts misinformation, let's set the record straight here.

From the Bureau of Justice Statistics:

On average, an estimated 211,200 rapes and sexual assaults went unreported to police each year between 2006 and 2010. Although serious violent crime was generally less likely to go unreported to the police than simple assault, a higher percentage of rape or sexual assault (65 percent) than simple assault (56 percent) victimizations went unreported over the five-year period.

As usual, Jay is wrong. But just because the facts are against him doesn't mean dumbass Jay will shut his stupid mouth anytime soon.

Why not give the rape victim a choice to kill an innocent human being? Why not give the rape victim a choice to be a murderer in response to becoming a victim?

The question rather answers itself.

You guys just don't get it. Statistics mean nothing while and after a guy punches your lights out, rips off your clothes and rapes you. Pregnancy is high right up there. STDs is high on the list of concerns. Getting a rape victim test and that personal intrusion, being interviewed over and over, humiliated in court and watching him go free although he admitted that he hit me repeatedly before hand.

You can take your non-violent rape crap and shove it your tight ass.

Bender said...

Abandoning the mother to deal with this alone is hardly a good answer, much less the best answer, even if it is arguably better than encouraging the mother to become an aggressor and perpetrator of violence against the innocent.

A woman who is raped deserves better than to be coldly left alone or to be told to kill the child within her.

The best answer is that she deserves to be treated with the deepest compassion, enormous support, and special care. The woman -- the mother -- and the child are both victims. They both deserve care and protection.

Almost nobody posts blog comments using their full real name. When people use full names it's frequently a fictitious name that's meant to provide some insight into who they think they are - like I assume the Jake Diamond posting here would like to be in some way associated with the detective novel character, although it's possible that Jake Diamond really is his name. Realizing that nobody would come here and talk about her rape while complaining about the intrusiveness of having to talk about her rape and then post under her real name, I googled you to find out what your screen name would say about you. Turns out it says that you're pretty ham-handed when it comes to self-parody. I believe that that's your real name about as much as I believe somebody who admitted to beating you wasn't convicted of committing a violent crime against you.

acm said...

Lindsey, I have no doubt that statistics don't matter to the victim herself and I am very sorry that you went through that terrible ordeal. Statistics do matter, though. The fact that a victim of rape must absolutely be terrified of becoming pregnant isn't really up for debate, though. We get that. The question is how often does it happen and what should be allowed when it does.

It's like the kidnapping of children by strangers---it happens rarely and lawmakers should take the statistics that show that seriously when they are looking at laws regarding child safety. But that doesn't much matter to the people who actually did lose their child to a stranger abduction (or who survived an abduction themselves) and it doesn't mean that parents whose children go missing (because they are lost, ran away for a short while, etc) aren't terrified of it. And, we need to separate rapes like what happened to you from "rapes" that happen between two willing-but-legally-unable-to-consent teenagers, just like we need to separate actual abductions from teenagers running off with their "true loves".

The FBI found that 84,767 rapes were reported to law enforcement authorities in 2010. The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, the gold standard in crime research, reports 188,380 rapes and sexual assaults on females and males in 2010.

Back to the topic at hand, I think Shanna has it right in what he meant with the following:

Here is Web MD regarding stress and pregnancy:

Alpha-amylase is secreted when the nervous system produces compounds known as catecholamines in response to the "fight or flight" stress reactions.

Buck Louis says there is early evidence that catecholamines released in response to this type of stress reduce blood flow, which slows the passage of the fertilized egg to the uterus.

If that is what he meant or something like it, despite how inartful it was said, is he in fact wrong?
Doesn't that interpretation make more sense than Althouse's argument that he thinks women can't get pregnant if they don't have orgasms. My guess is, he couldn't muster the scientific argument when talking off the cuff and so came up with what he said. My follow up question is, how many people who think what he said was really dumb are aware of this fact?
My guess is probalby most AREN'T.

It's like finding fault in Sarah Palin's statements on Paul Revere. How many attacking her themselves have no real understanding on the topic they are attacking her on.

Lets at least find out what he was talking about before accusing him of forgiving rape.

Two wrongs don't make a right. I have three daughters, all teens or preteens, and I would never make the horror of what they lived through worse by suggesting that they have murder on their conscience as a way to escape their current suffering. If it happened to me, my husband and I would gladly raise the child. I don't understand the mentality that would seek to inflict evil on another in order to escape the evil that has been done to her.

It's pretty common for Christians/homeschoolers, etc. to have one or more adoptions, and I suspect nearly every good sized church to have families in it with multiple adoptions - often kids from missions who were conceived and brought into the world in simply inhuman conditions, both domestically and abroad.

All without government making them do it. It's the damnedest thing.

If they're adopted, as opposed to just foster children, they don't even qualify for Medicaid.

The churches frequently help out.

You live in a bubble.

Unknown said...

Please name a crime category where up to 10% of said crimes are falsely reported.

Why? It's totally irrelevant to the question of underreporting of rape and sexual assault. Every bit of evidence supports the conclusion that rape and sexual assault are grossly underreported. You can't change that fact by whining about so-called "false accusations."

Again, your obsession with "false accusations" and your stubborn denial of the clear evidence that demonstrates beyond a shadow of doubt that these crimes are underreported leads me to believe that you have some sort of perversion or personal involvement with this type of assault.

Jake,

Here's an in-depth look at the evangelical "adoption movement." From The Nation.

http://www.thenation.com/article/160096/evangelical-adoption-crusade#

A few exerpts:

in the past two years evangelical advocacy has skyrocketed. In 2009 Russell Moore, dean of the School of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and author of the 2009 book Adopted for Life, shepherded through a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) resolution calling on all 16 million members of the denomination to become involved in adoption or “orphan care.” Last year at least five evangelical adoption conferences were held, and between 1,000 and 2,000 churches participated in an “Orphan Sunday” event in November. And in February, the mammoth evangelical adoption agency Bethany Christian Services announced that its adoption placements had increased 13 percent since 2009, in large part because of the mobilization of churches.

...One result has been the creation of “rainbow congregations” across the country, like the congregation Moore helps pastor in Louisville, Highview Baptist. An active adoption ministry has brought 140 adopted children into the congregation in the past five years. These children don’t recognize the flags of their home countries, Moore proudly noted at a 2010 conference, but they can all sing “Jesus Loves Me.”

The movement cuts across evangelical distinctions, with the Southern Baptists taking a doctrinal lead; charismatic prayer warrior Lou Engle, co-founder of TheCall, praying for “the most outrageous adoption movement to be released through the church”; and Rick Warren declaring that members of his Saddleback Church will adopt 500 children in three years.

Really, libtard... you didn't perceive this? This is like not perceiving a thunderclap.

Churches report a “contagious” “adoption culture” in which even small congregations have adopted dozens of children in just a few years.

Unknown said...

If pregnancy via rape is so damn common, those kids are going somewhere.

Pregnancy as a consequence of rape ISN'T common, at least not using the ordinary, accepted definition of the word "common." One reason for this is that abortion is an option for women who've been raped.

I suspect that there are relatively few babies available for adoption that are a result of rape or incest. I seriously doubt that a substantial fraction of women who've been raped, become pregnant as a result, and decided to carry the fetus to term, then decide to put the baby up for adoption.

Sadly, you appear to be a very poor reader. I don't doubt that certain religious groups have higher adoption rates than the population in general, but if you actually stop and think about the numbers involved in rape pregnancies, it's highly unlikely that you or Shana have "many friends" who've adopted children resulting from rape.

The fact that you've tried to change the point of debate from adoption of children conceived as a result of rape to adoption of children in general further convinces me that you don't have a clue.

Shana and I associate with a better class of people than you do.

Highly doubtful. For one thing, a "better class of people" wouldn't make such a ridiculously ignorant and classless assertion.

Umm, abortion doesn't prevent pregnancy, genius.

Do you know the same people we do?

I know about five such families, personally. Three via extended family, two via agencies. That's where I know the circumstances.

So if you don't know the same people we do, then STFU.

I suspect that there are relatively few babies available for adoption that are a result of rape or incest. I seriously doubt that a substantial fraction of women who've been raped, become pregnant as a result, and decided to carry the fetus to term.

Only if you think that 48 percent is not a "substantial fraction."

32.2 percent of known such babies are carried to term and kept, according to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Another 12 percent miscarry, and 6 percent are placed for adoption. So only about half of rape-induced pregnancies abort.

Adjust for false rape claims and you have a majority.

This is what I meant when I said liberals are always trying to project their own degeneracy and narcissism on normal people.

Correct--it terminates pregnancy, dumbass.

No, I don't hang out with religious freaks and fanatics.

Know of? LOL. Yeah, that doesn't constitute "many friends" by normal standards. You're just proving that you're full of shit.

Only if you think that 48 percent is not a "substantial fraction."

You really think 48% of babies available for adoption are the result of rape or incest? Ok, you've convinced me that you're a nutjob.

Adjust for false rape claims and you have a majority.

You're an innumerate clown. Seriously.

So Akins was right?!

Your ignorance of science is noted.

No, genius. 48 percent of babies concieved via rape are carried to term or miscarry. That is, not aborted.

Do try to read more carefully.

You're an innumerate clown. Seriously.

Says the idiot who severely misread the statistics in your very last post.

Says the idiot who said he doubts that a significant percentage of rape conceptions are not aborted, and then was proven to be grossly wrong.

You lose, clown.

I don't hang out with religious freaks and fanatics

Bigot.

When I said you are a poor reader, I didn't expect you to prove me right again.

What I wrote, quite clearly, is that I suspect that there are relatively few babies available for adoption that are a result of rape or incest. The statistics you posted prove my conjecture is correct.

I'm sorry to say that your stupidity seems to be a major obstacle to moving this conversation forward. Let's leave it this way: I am right and you are wrong, as proven by the data.

Thanks for playing, loser.

Jake, at 8:06, above.

Your own words, dumbass.

Own them.
