Should Todd "legitimate rape" Akin step aside?

The editors of the Nation Review Online say he should:
While Akin is a stalwart conservative and an honorable man, we regret to say that he inspires no such confidence. That is one reason why Senator Claire McCaskill, the sitting Democratic senator, boosted him during the Republican primaries with ads calling him a “true conservative.” She knew that she is the weakest Senate incumbent on the ballot this year and that her only hope was to draw a weak opponent. Akin won a three-way primary with a plurality of the vote; there was no run-off. McCaskill’s strategy is now paying off.

Akin has backed off from his remarks, albeit with the politician’s excuse of “misspeaking.” People who make such remarks on television are typically capable of making more like them, or rather incapable of exercising the judgment to refrain. We suspect that this same lack of judgment will cause Akin to blow past tomorrow evening’s deadline for him to leave the race and allow the Republicans to select a better nominee. We hope the congressman, who surely wants to see a Senate with as much conservative strength as possible next year, will prove us wrong.
Akin should...

ADDED: "National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Tex.) informed Rep. Todd Akin on Monday that the national GOP will not spend money to help elect him to the Senate...."

AND: Hannity, talking to Akin, essentially tells him to get out:
I think there is one political reality that I think has to be faced by you and your campaign and that is that you know, the reality here is that Democrats now have a ton of ammunition and they are now going to try to use these remarks to hurt everybody they can. And if I was put in that position, I would at least be thinking about what is in the best interest of the party. hat is in the best interest of, you know, Mitt Romney in this case. What is in the best interest of the people of Missouri, are they going to be able to hear a campaign about issues or is this going to be the distraction of the campaign. Are you -- you're not even considering that?"
Krauthammer says Akin must leave:
"He's got to leave... He's toxic. Nobody will touch him. Republicans aren't going to support him. He's not going to get any money. They've tossed away a seat that they could easily have won. It isn't only that it was offensive and toxic; it was unbelievably stupid. And there is enough stupidity in Congress that we don't need to add to it in this large amount. The guy's got to leave."
It was sharp of Republicans to drop Akin cold. No one thought he was worth defending.

"And he talked about the medical possibility of becoming pregnant from a single traumatizing rape."

Hmmmm many happily married or commited couples have sex a LOT of times before pregnancy occurs. Because the woman doesn't get pregnant every time is only a mystery to the catholic clergy and a few guilt ridden teenagers.

The problem statement is "forceable rape" not resultant pregnancy. There is rape of sorts between underaged kids in parked cars to be technical and there is
rape at the point of a gun. Both turn out to be concensual (the gun scene so not to be killed outright) but it is still rape, plain and simple.

What this arrogant asshole said was both scientifically wrong and a sterotypical male myth that inside the heart of every raped woman is a wanton hussy who is begging for it.

Not drawn up by a mix of Roman Catholic Clergy and Republican oafs who are as afraid of the mysteries of a vagina as they are that they themselves don't "measure up".

Oh good, I was hoping someone would come along and dumb down the level of discourse. Shiloh and Cedarford have been half-assing it today.

No he should not he was one of all of the 217 republicans to vote for this crap in the past. He needs to embrace it, love it and run on it.

Why are they now running away from it?

This is outrageous.

And Paul Ryan was won of the sponsors of this rape/abortion bill..but now has mysteriously had a change of mind.

If you embrace the fiscal stuff you also need to embrace the social stuff-it's a package deal. Like a Christmas gift.

Now own it bitches.

I am more shocked that other republicans are throwing him over the bridge when they voted for this shit too.

Are there no fiscal/liberatraian pubes left? With the fiscal you got to except the crazy social stuff too.

Akin is no more crazy than the rest of the repube congress, well maybe except the ones that went swimming in the nude in Israel...with families and children.

Get rid of the social nonsense and you lose your base but you do possibly get another group of voters?

Good luck.

I just hope to God Virginia Foxx was not swimming naked in Israel because that would make me really unhard. Ben Quayle was though and that is kind of hot.

Excellent use of weasel words there, T.

It works the other way too-- embrace the social liberal and you also need to embrace the fiscally liberal stuff-it's a package deal. Like a Festivus gift.

No sooner did I mention that the idiots like Eve Enslers and Andy Sullivans of the world have made it impossible for us to have a rational conversation about anything involving vaginas than Lindsey surfaces, like a spirit summoned from the vasty deep.

Lindsey just wrote that sex at the point of a gun is consentual.

Holy crap. She's an order of magnitude more ignorant than Akin could ever dream of being!!!

Do people who want to give the government more and more power think only smart people who agree with them will seek that power? Do they think the Akins and Jackson-Lees of the world will stop being elected?

I don't get how you can keep complaining about the people in government while voting to increase government control over your lives.

Who is the person who shows such great judgement that you want to increase their powers? Biden? Debbie Wasserman Shultz? Obama (who selected them both)?, Akin? Ryan?

C4 @5:45, I will think more of your quality if you source all that, and less if you don't.

Lindsey: weren't you in a casting-couch porno a year or two ago? Which one was that? Since we have pretty much seen your quality we can skip the timesuck of trying to take you seriously.

The reason Akin should go at this time is because he's proved at a bad time, publicly, that he lets things go through his head and out of his mouth that he does not quite understand, evidently by accident, and can be manipulated by media harassment into doing so.

Nichevo said...

And fuckers, it's "consensual," from "consent."

Well, no.
The underage kids in the car would be an example of (possibly) statutory rape, not forced rape.
The gun is forced rape.

So you illustrate the reason for the term while arguing against it.

You don't even really know what Akin said and your hysterical comments clearly demonstrate that.

If abortion is wrong, there should be no exceptions. I believe we have heard the expression 2 wrongs dont make a right? Lots of legislators believe exactly as Akin do [personhood bills-Im looking at you Paul Ryan] Akin just got it out there in a really frank way. You pro lifers are a little more twisted than I thought.

Following your logic: if abortion is right, there should be no restrictions.

Could chickelit...or anyone else who thinks abortion kills a baby...please give an example of when it would be acceptable to murder a child?

That aside, Akin has a new TV ad out where he says "I used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that I apologize."

I wonder how the extremists who kept insisting that he said nothing wrong will react. Will they call him "idiot" and say he is retarded?

Matt Sablan said...

The argument has been that Akin did not mean that women can never get pregnant from rape, therefore, they were not raped if they do. So, what he said IS stupid. What he meant to say, however, may be accurate, mattering how you want to measure things as rare (though his reasoning for why they are rare, the "shutting the whole thing down" part may not be accurate and it could just be random chance that rapes don't lead to as many pregnancies).

However, again, the particular stupid of what he said has been mischaracterized so badly and twisted to attack all Republicans, that the right is forced to try to explain, over and over again, that he did not say what people say he said.

He said something incredibly stupid that was twisted. When, what he really said, is that this is rare. So, really, Akin has just been getting the crap beat out of him rhetorically for saying something that is reasonable (Pregnancies resulting from rapes are statistically rare) in an incredibly stupid way. Something about legitimate rape and shutting it all down; it's too dumb to bother quoting.

The right felt that stupid should not be rewarded and wants him gone. The left is torn between wanting him to stay for an easy electoral win, and thinking that he thinks women can't get pregnant from rapes and that women secretly wanted it after all.

In short: The right sees him as stupid; the left sees him as evil. So you can see how even though I think he's stupid, I find it annoying to have to constantly step in and re-explain (to the same people!) that he's not a rape monster out to make rape not that big of a deal.

shanna - I did not and you know that wasn't what I meant.

If a gun or knife is used the the woman has a choice between relenting (in effect consenting) it is that she chose to live and be raped rather than risk dying.

Don't try and distort my meanings. There is enough of that crap here.

-- That's not consent by any definition of the word. In fact, consent cannot be given while under such duress. I know what you mean, because I am taking your sentence, diagramming it in my head and giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Something, coincidentally, if you did for Akin, you'd realize that what he said was stupid, poorly formed, but in no way saying that rape is legitimate.

Spoonful of sugar for thought: Give others the same benefit of the doubt and consideration of their meaning as you want given to yourself. It makes it much easier to cut through to their meaning, no matter how poorly formed their sentence structure.

Just checking --- do you actually know what CONSENT means?

If you do something so as to not be killed --- it's not consent.

If a gun or knife is used the the woman has a choice between relenting (in effect consenting) it is that she chose to live and be raped rather than risk dying.

...so, no, you don't know what it means. You decide to double down on the stupid.

At what point, out of curiosity, is something NOT consensual? Most people say "If a gun is pointed at me" wouldn't qualify as "consent" --- but, you, apparently, feel differently.

damikesc said...

If the child is threatening the life of you or your family.

You know, the same as with adults.

Is self-defense really considered "murder"?

George Zimmerman is on trial for it --- so, apparently.

"Legitimate" rape??
If the Republicans win, the rich will abort Medicare and Social Security,
as they rape this COUNTRY...."legitimately".
Lyin' Ryan and More-mon-ey Romney are the Conservative Caviar Candidates.
They're the DREAM team for the super-rich - they want it ALL!
But they're the NIGHTMARE team for seniors, the middle-class , women’s rights, students receiving Pell grants, and the rest of us who are struggling .... while the big corporations send jobs and profits overseas, and the super-rich like Romney avoid paying their fair share.
Romney-Ryan can fool some of the people some of the time.
But no more - we’re ON to you guys!
