"Stop being the stupid party."

Says Bobby Jindal.
"It’s time for a new Republican Party that talks like adults.... We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. I’m here to say we’ve had enough of that."
He's absolutely right. And it's not enough merely to avoid stupidity — "legitimate rape" type stuff. They need to become the smart party, as well-grounded as possible in science and economics. The Democrats aren't that smart, but somehow they're able to pull off the appearance of being smart. Outsmart them. The other side will always try to portray anything the GOP stands for as stupid and not just stupid, but mean-spirited, sexist, and racist. If the party were firmly and reliably backed up with science and economics, Republicans could defend themselves (and they would be worth supporting).

"The fascists weren't the ONLY dictators to use that symbol" is an interesting approach to take.

It's one George Washington would have plainly understood.

What's wrong with you? You claim to know history and then prove that you can't understand how much one heavily fraught period of time changes the meaning of some of its most notable concepts.

If the most famous and lauded wielder of the fasces was good enough inspiration for Washington, then a decoration of FDR with merely the object sounds hardly nefarious.

It was Mussolini who appropriated the worst elements of ancient Roman politics and warped them into something entirely different.

But feel free to disregard an entire period of history due to how it was misused by one man.

Someone not ignorant of history would know better. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you don't.

Inga you really have to get past the google searches for fascism. Il Duce was a socialist provocateur and newspaper agitprop writer; That he turned from socialism to fascism doesn't mean he turned from left to right. No, there was a schism on the left and leftists branched out to other variances of socialism.

There was a schism in communist Russia between Stalin and Trotsky. Were either of them right wingers?

Il Duce was a lefty through and through both during his socialist days and his later fascist days. Fascism, as evidenced by American fascists was similarly LEFT wing and not right wing.

He would write this:
"Fascism has taken up an attitude of complete opposition to the doctrines of Liberalism, both in the political field and in the field of economics".

But the liberalism he is referring to is not the liberalism of today. See, liberalism itself has morphed into a form of socialism today. But he was referring to a form of neo liberalism which would be in keeping with individualism.

Mussolini in his youth was an ARDENT socialist. He was called Il Duce when he was the leader of the Italian socialist party. He broke with socialism not because he disagreed with socialism but because the socialists were neutral in the first World War and he saw a way for Italy to get their hands on Austrian territory at the end of the war. It was a power grab pure and simple. But it didn't make him right wing.

Not to go into the whole history of Il Duce, but he was a leftist through his whole life. (As was Hitler and the nazis) That he may have fought other lefitsts does not make him a righty. There is countless examples of intercine warfare amongst the various lefty factions. But even though they don't get a long it doesn't change their ideological bent.

jr565 said...

THe fact that Fascists were nationalists does not make them rightists. Communist itself split over the issue of nationalism into Leninists and Trotskyites. The Trotskyites were the internationalists and the Leninists were the nationalists. In fact Lenin himself described himself as "right wing" but that was only in the context of communism, which is left wing.
Do you understand? Would you argue that either Lenin or Trotsky were somehow right wingers? That is ludicrious. Nationalism has been part of communism and its various splinter groups since the fouding of communism. Hence, you can't argue that nationalism equals "RIGHT WING".
Fascists are left wing. Get it thorugh your thick skulls.
When Hitler invaded Russia Stalkin appealed to nationalism to rally Russia. He called it the Second Patriotic War (the first being the Tsarist defense against Napoleon). He reopened the churches (and note, he reformed the army along traditional ranks of the Russian Imperial Army.
He may have started as an international socialist, but pivoted to national socialism when it was convenient for him to rally Russia.
Again, natioanlism does not mean right wing. Understand?
Il Duce, and hItler and Stalin all left wingers.

jr565 said...

Economically Il Duce was for "capitalism" under tight state control. Again, far left. Run from the top down. Capitalism was run by the National Council of Corporations which brought an end to class warfare.
The national council of corporations regulated wages, work hours , and work conditions.

"A Charter of Labour in 1927 introduced an annual paid vacation, a range of social services, free vocational education, and higher rates of pay for night workers. High national tariffs reduced the impact of foreign competition and there were massive public building projects designed to reduce the unemployed."
Sounds a lot like FDR right? Again, Mussolini and the fascists were not righties. They were only right insofar as they were to the right of say, Stalin.

On what grounds, Inga, are you suggesting that Il Duce is somehow a right winger?

Anonymous said...

Militant nationalism, proclaiming the racial and cultural superiority of the dominant ethnic group and asserting that group's inherent right to a special dominant position over other peoples in both the domestic and the international order

The adulation of a single charismatic national leader said to possess near superhuman abilities and to be the truest representation of the ideals of the national culture, whose will should therefore literally be law

Emphasis on the absolute necessity of complete national unity, which is said to require a very powerful and disciplined state organization (especially an extensive secret police and censorship apparatus), unlimited by constitutional restrictions or legal requirements and under the absolute domination of the leader and his political movement or party

Militant anti-Communism coupled with the belief in an extreme and imminent threat to national security from powerful and determined Communist forces both inside and outside the country

Contempt for democratic socialism, democratic capitalism, liberalism, and all forms of individualism as weak, degenerate, divisive and ineffective ideologies leading only to mediocrity or national suicide

Glorification of physical strength, fanatical personal loyalty to the leader, and general combat-readiness as the ultimate personal virtues

A sophisticated apparatus for systematically propagandizing the population into accepting these values and ideas through skilled manipulation of the mass media, which are totally monopolized by the regime once the movement comes to power

A propensity toward pursuing a militaristic and aggressive foreign policy

Strict regulation and control of the economy by the regime through some form of corporatist economic planning in which the legal forms of private ownership of industry are nominally preserved but in which both workers and capitalists are obliged to submit their plans and objectives to the most detailed state regulation and extensive wage and price controls, which are designed to insure the priority of the political leadership's objectives over the private economic interests of the citizenry. Therefore under fascism most of the more important markets are allowed to operate only in a non-competitive, cartelized, and governmentally "rigged" fashion.

Don't worry retard, this is making insurance more widespread to silly people like you.

The only problem is we are the stupid party. To have transcendence as part of life, at least for a faction of the party, requires some degree of conflict with the idea of evolution because that faction is inclined to a literal reading of the Bible. Also it may require a feminine modesty and circumspection in part for the purposes of avoiding rape. Now a part of the world view also emphasizes fiscal prudence and seeing yourself as the locus of control for your outcomes which may be practical important things but for a deficiency of which it is harder to cast the 'other party' as stupid.

Wow, a more than 300 post Inga/Ritmo abortion.

I do notice how many times that stupid cunt says she is leaving, then drools out some more weapons grade retardedness.

And calling another poster a wench, I will remember that next time you do your usual victimhood civility plea routine.

P. S. You are still a stupid cunt. My apologies to cunts.

So lefties claim the mantle of science and rationality, and then try to attribute all things deemed successful to a policy or action of their party. Everything deemed wrong in the world is attributed to wrong-headed policies of the other party, and also to the inability to adopt the policy of their party.

This is the opposite of the scientific approach and highly irrational. It distorts data to arrive at pre-conceived biased opinions. This is the realm of academics, lefty bloggers, and bureaucrats, but not businesspeople who have to consider all the data and go with what actually works, even if it means admitting you were wrong.

Macroeconomics is purely a forensic exercise. Its predictive capabilities are not accurate (anyone remember Christine Romer?). Lefties take a chimeric approach with macroeconomics. For it to be useful as a predictive tool, it is implicit that human behavior is known, predictable, and quantifiable. Which is a very conservative philosophy, to ignore progressive and innovative behaviors by these same humans.

Someone much smarter than me (which could be just about anybody) quoted this passage to me yesterday:

"Abusive people don't behave abusively all the time or even most of the time. Real abuse is sporadic, intermittent, occasional, temporary and sustained only for short bursts. It doesn't take much mistreatment to terrorize or demoralize a person for a very long time. It is quite common for an abusive person to behave normally most of the time and even be kind, polite, humble, gracious, generous, devoted or apologetic in periods between and immediately following episodes of mistreatment. This is often how an abusive person draws a victim closer to themselves between outbursts. It is also common during these periods for an abusive person to want to "rewrite" their own history or try to influence their victim to misrepresent or ignore past events as a way of justifying themselves or dealing with the discomfort they feel over the realities of their dysfunctional behavior. The victim will often play along, grateful for a period of calm, happy to "let sleeping dogs lie" and not wanting to provoke any further outbursts."

Just sayn'

And Trooper, you of all people who had all of your last comments to me here on Althouse deleted, over a year ago, very abusive comments BTW, have the nerve to actually speak of abusive people AS IF you aren't one othe worst here?

You don't want me to mention the vile, extremely hateful things you have said about Althouse and Meade in other places. Why did you choose to come back here to comment anyway? I believe it's ONLY to stir the pot.

No mention of President Mom Jeans, Whoresoftheinternet, or Mehadras or any one other multiple sock puppets, when you speak of abusive people AS IF you have some authority to speak of who is and isn't an abusive personality. That is how I know your little sermon on what abusive people are is not sincere.

Some people think it is all about them. All the time. Every time.

Guilty conscience?

Pretty funny.
