At the Black-and-White Cafe...

... you can be positive or negative.

(Animation of my photograph by Hazy Dave.)

ADDED: If the image doesn't show up for you — it does for me — it may have something to do with the form HD set the image. I don't know how to change that. Feel free to advise me. I'll put the image below the fold. I think I need to upload a GIF somehow, and I have no idea how to work with that. Maybe this is my cue that I need to learn how to do GIFs myself!

AND: This should work:

Nothing shows up. Is it flash? I'm on my iPad and Steve Jobs hates flash.

Nothing shows up on my Kindle either.

I just saw your pie question -- I've been out most of the day.

The pies at Humble are pretty good. Very nice buttery crusts that don't fall apart. A Cherry Galette about 5 inches across was $4 and was delicious. Perfect size to split.

I found this little lead dragon.  It makes me happy.

I'm moving out of my apartment because I am being forced to share my room with my landlord's wife because they are having marriage problems...awkward...she is more than twice my age....

Missing lynx, Madame.

Synova, The Blonde would love something like that.

How big is it?

PS A little super glue will fix the arm (if you still have it).

PPS AEH, it depends. Is she that grumpy?

I'm watching the pilot of "The Americans" and they have a school assembly where everyone sings the national anthem... about half an octave low. Not a *single* person cracked or screeched on "la-a-nd of the free-ee". It was so *wrong*. lol.

I'm surprised that in that earlier thread about Obama skeet shooting that no one pointed out that "skeet" is Black slang for ejaculate.

edutcher, The dragon is 5.5 inches long. The base on the dryad figurine is 1 inch square so she's about 1.5 inches tall. The model can't be cast as a single piece, so I just glued her arm back on. :)

Being Breitbart is how Ann Althouse rolls.

To the damned-to-an-accurate-suitable Hell of us others, thank you.

And I am truly sorry for many reasons to this host and their eminence in the plurals, whatever we make that be.

At a minimum, Ann Althouse continues to thoughtfully make America great.

Wow. The silver spoons have jumped in price.

Yay!

edutcher: Yes, she is. She also wants to leave her husband, and as a solution, her husband is putting her in his Montreal rental with girls in their 20s. Kind of weird.

George Bush delegating power to Ted Kennedy provided proof, enough, of Republican racism and evil.

Why let a white guy write No Child Left Behind?

Racism.

You idiot.

I know! Praise be to God! Now they're finally approaching their value. Fingers crossed with 4 hours to go!

(BTW, Madison Man is referring to these 18th century American silver spoons, made by a famous silversmith named Philip Syng Jr, that I'm currently selling on eBay.)

Guns and crazy people do not mix.

How do we keep guns from getting in the hands of crazy people?

How do we start a needed conversation in America about how a whole host of social/societal "Rights" everyone seems to think should be delivered gratis - need to be balanced by requiring social/societal responsibilities???

There seems to be a problem. In order to insure that your daily supply of Gatsby remains steady we have activated the emergency Gatsby semi-random sentence selector to produce a sentence before the day is out.

The straw seats of the car hovered on the edge of combustion; the woman next to me perspired delicately for a while into her white shirtwaist, and then, as her newspaper dampened under her fingers, lapsed despairingly into deep heat with a desolate cry.

We see the car has straw seats. What kind of car would that be? What kind of seat? Straw, he says. That's odd. The woman is wearing a shirtwaist, whatever that is, and does not use antiperspirant. She perspires delicately for awhile but then presumably less delicately and dampens the whole newspaper. And it's not clear the lady or the deep heat is doing the desolate crying, it could be poetic you know, at any rate, it appears to be summer. Or else perhaps the heavily sweating newspaper-wetting lady desolately cried in the deep heat, "Oh my fucking god, it's hot!" Fitzgerald dances delicately around this sweating lapsing swearing desolately crying woman.

Thank you Chip. I am here longing for the next out of context sentence. Shirtwaist dresses. I am sure they will come back in style. Mans shirt with the shirt tail extended to skirt length. Very modest and demure. A more informal Gibson girl effect. I actually like them, if I were thinking of wearing a skirt.

@ Synova

I followed your link and then looked at your Mars posts. The major obstacle I see to a surface Mars colony under a dome is that Mars has no magnetosphere to protect the planet from the effects of solar radiation. Sections 2.2 and 2.3 of this Wikipedia article on Terraforming of Mars explain the problem in depth. The Earth is habitable because of the atmosphere and the magnetosphere created by the spinning of the planet's molten core, which protect us from the worst effects of solar and interstellar radiation, including increased rates of cancer, cataracts and genetic mutation. Without them, any planetary human colony in our Solar system would almost certainly have to be located underground, with meters of rock necessary for radiation shielding.

wyo sis: It's Montreal and from what I hear, the renting laws are super lax, and it is a loser pays all legal system, so most people get stepped on. The one nice thing, is that many leases are month to month, so a tenant can just leave if he or she so desires. But I am not 100% of the legality of it. I read my lease and spit back what is in the lease to him, and he chose to ignore it because "he has last word."

(Ha ha.) What it really means is the gif needs to be posted on the web somewhere, with the link placed above...

Clyde, there was some recent news suggesting that surface radiation levels are significantly lower on Mars than previously thought. Even so, I was suggesting the domed areas as eventual parks and open space (after service as repositories for volitiles)rather than work and residential areas, which really ought to be underground, I think.

As far as I know all the current Mars mission plans involve inflatable surface habitats.

Actually, the major obstacle to a Mars colony is that only morons (or idiots, I forget which is stupider) would go there. That makes survival in a hi-tech environment problematic.
