"The Nine Most Insane Quotes From The NRA’s New Apocalyptic Op-Ed."

Wayne LaPierre opinion piece is translated into He's Crazy! format for safe consumption by the readers of Think Progress, so they can keeping thinking: Progress!

ADDED: I hope Think Progress isn't also flogging the lefty meme that we must not, in our struggle against gun violence, stigmatize the mentally ill. There's a meme-collision here: 1. Don't fear the mentally ill, who are harmless and deserving of empathy, and 2. That man seems like a mentally ill person, so we need to loathe and fear him.

7. But The NRA Is Totally Not Paranoid: “Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.”

That crazy LaPierre. Hurricanes are for climate change, not guns.

I have the feeling Wayne LaPierre doesn't give a rats ass about this silly crap. He's not running for anything and he knows that many people, perhaps a definite majority are glad he's doing what he does, even if they won't say it out loud.

No they don't want crazy people or criminals to kill innocent people but like the vice president they know gun laws won't stop that

It's the Jon Stewart school of news journalism.

They didn't actually present any facts, they just poked fun.

I had not known that Phoenix was having a kidnapping problem. Two seconds with Bing takes me to ABC news: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6848672&page=1

They even quote Gov. Moonbeam: " California Attorney General Jerry Brown warned that as the U.S. government focuses so intently on Islamic extremist groups, other types of terrorists – those involved with the same kidnappings, extortion and drug cartels that are sweeping Phoenix – are overlooked.

"Those [criminals], for the average Californian or the average America, may be a more immediate threat to their well being," Brown said.

In fact, kidnappings and other crimes connected to the Mexican drug cartels are quickly spreading across the border, from Texas to California. The majority of the victims are either illegal aliens or connected to the drug trade.

An ABC News' investigation uncovered horrific cases of chopped-off hands, legs and heads when a victim's family doesn't pay up fast enough. "

So, yeah, Wayne may have gotten his facts right. Feel free to poke at his conclusions, but obscuring the facts is no favor.

The idea that you have the right to defend yourself is much more widespread than the left will allow itself to admit. My wife and I had been thinking of getting our pistol permits here in CT for some time (it's been 30 years since I last shot), but did join the NRA after this latest frenzy started. I have heard anecdotal evidence that there are many like us. Gun shops estimate up to 30% of their sales are to new gun owners in the last few years.

(By the way, you would never know that there is an investigative task force on Newtown here in CT, with their report due out in March. The governor stopped getting daily briefings a few weeks ago and nothing is being given (or leaked) to the press. My guess is something adverse to the gun control effort will be disclosed, thus the silence)

“Latin American drug gangs have invaded every city of significant size in the United States. Phoenix is already one of the kidnapping capitals of the world, and though the states on the U.S./Mexico border may be the first places in the nation to suffer from cartel violence, by no means are they the last.”

An example of how the leftist propoganda machine works. One leftist claims obvious facts are "insane". The "insane" definition becomes the media talking point while the leftists meticulously ignore the disconnect between fact and conclusion. Anyone trying to return the discussion to the facts from the conclusion is demonized and the substance ignored.

phx showed us how leftists implement these principles when the media accused gun rights supporters of heckling the father of a child shooting victim. In that case a leftist commenter repeated the leftist talking points demonstrably at odds with facts viewable in the video. phx siezed that crutch. When the deficiencies in those talking points were identified he made excuses about why he could not evaluate the facts for himself. This refusal allowed him to justify believing the demonstrably false conclusions.

Leftists don't remain in their fantasy world by happenstance. They work at it.

Indoctrination combined with a failure to grow-up explains much of it.

Hopefully the boomer cohort will pass through the body politic soon like a painful, impacted stool.

The drug gangs ARE in most cities across the U.S. Just reading the papers shows that with all the arrest. If one thinks gun control will stop gangs from getting guns then well drug laws ought to stop them from getting drugs, right?

Violence is violence. To say one wants to stop 'gun violence' is to ignore that the violent will simply use other methods to kill (presuming they can't get a gun.) Most South American countries have very strict gun control yet are very violent, far more than the USA.

"We will not appease". Dang right we won't.

The 2nd Amendment is not about DUCK HUNTING. It did not say the rights of the MILITIA or rights of the STATE or rights of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. It said RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

Simple as that. And we most certainly do VOTE.

We are not crazy. We are just in the right.

Bruce Hayden said...

I agree with a number of the posters above. The lefties here pull something out of context, put a title on it, and then they all to the Jon Stewart laugh at it.

But, of course, Obama is driving the economy into the ground, with his almost six trillion dollars of additional debt and deficit spending. And, of course, that means that there is less money to pay for cops to defend us (and, to make matters, worse, Chicago cops want a big raise right now, because they are doing such a good job at protecting everyone in their city). And, that means that cops are getting laid off - at least one city in CA has laid off all their police force.

Do, these leftie gun grabbers really believe that removing semiautomatic rifles and regular capacity magazines from law abiding civilians will actually make them safer? How are they going to induce the criminals to disarm?

We saw a couple days ago where two NY cops watched on as the subway killer they were looking for attacked yet someone else, and only intervened when the killer was subdued by his victim, after receiving numerous stab wounds to the head. He might have been able to put a quick end to the attack - except that this was NYC, with its strict gun laws. So, the moral there is that cops have little duty to protect anyone, except maybe themselves, even when seeing a violent felony being committed right in front of themselves. That is if they don't get laid off because of Obamanomics (and the greed of their unions).

Thanks to Obama, and his feckless policies on the economy, he feckless policies on the border and with illegal immigration, etc., it can be more dangerous to law abiding people, and, yet, their solution is to seize the weapons most usable in personal defense.

5. If You Want Gun Safety, You Want Civilization To Collapse: “After Hurricane Sandy, we saw the hellish world that the gun prohibitionists see as their utopia. Looters ran wild in south Brooklyn. There was no food, water or electricity. And if you wanted to walk several miles to get supplies, you better get back before dark, or you might not get home at all.”

I don't know how much denser the progs could be. A natural disaster occurred. And, in parts of NYC, it was pretty bad. The NYPD was mostly, it seemed back in the more politically powerful parts of the city, and, for a day or so, still preparing for the marathon. NYC, being a progressive Utopia of sorts, had effectively disarmed the lower classes of law abiding people. So, you had the roving bands of looters, armed either illegally with guns, or legally with blunt objects such as baseball bats, and they were running at will throughout some of the more remote and devastated sections of the city, terrorizing everyone there. No police when you needed them, and no guns for protection, because the criminals might get their hands on them.

Why was this sort of thing so much worse in NYC after Sandy, and before that, NOLA after Katrina, than in the surrounding countryside and states? Because the progressive Utopian social engineering breaks down in the face of natural disasters. You are supposed to sacrifice your own personal safety in trade for the promise that the police will protect you, but this promise is fragile, esp. since it is made by a highly politicized government. So, when the police are needed the most, they aren't there.

After Katrina, Mississippi and the rest of Louisiana still had their guns, and so didn't have the roving gangs looting and pillaging. And, after Sandy, New Jersey and the rest of New York still had their guns, and so didn't have the same sorts of gangs.

It isn't that anyone wants natural disasters, but, rather, that natural disasters do happen, and when they do, natural order tends to break down, and, in many cases, normal police protection is reduced, if not nonexistent.

This is fairly typical of the intellectual level of the gun control "conversation". Most (not all) supporters of gun rights offer arguments in favor of their positions based on experience (e.g., the uselessness of the 1994 "assault weapons ban"), law (DC v. Heller), information (semi-automatic rifles and pistols fire one shot per trigger pull, magazines can be replaced in a couple of seconds no matter how few bullets you are allowed to load into them), etc. Most (not all) supporters of gun control ignore the arguments and rely instead on stirring up emotions to an irrational level against those who support gun rights (they are "murderers", they are responsible for the "slaughter of the innocent", they are "terrorists").

Why do you think that is?

jim said...

Most mentally ill people are in fact no threat to anyone but themselves.

When they get into positions of power, that often changes fast.

LaPierre spent four solid years telling anyone who'd listen that "Obama is coming for your guns!" Then he changed the con to "Obama will be coming for your guns in his second term!" without skipping a beat, & as if the last four years of paranoid hysterics had never happened. Unlike many, I'm inclined to think that's an act of calculated cynicism, not delusional thinking.

Little need be said of his decrying the already-refuted fiction that violent video games cause shootings - the declining rate of violence since the rise of FPS & online games speaks for itself.

The NRA is a political lobby that represents arms dealers & manufacturers. Its only interest in gun owners is as marks to be kept terrified 24/7 so they can be squeezed for every possible buck while they can.

Hyping crime in an era of falling crime rates is par for the course for LaPierre, who never met a profitable myth he didn't promptly sell for whatever the market would bear. Some kids get pointlessly slaughtered in the process? Tough shit: you gotta expect some collateral damage when your product's only practical use is killing, so suck it up, America ... & make sure you keep those checks coming in!

This exact evidence 'refutes' that gun control reduces violence. It's revealing that leftists understand the concepts but fail to apply them consistently. It's like they choose when to follow science and when not to depending on whether the science advances their predetermined preferences.

n.n said...

Well, progress is a strictly ambiguous concept until it is qualified. It's now considered progress to presume guilt, to inherit guilt, to extrapolate (e.g. from incidental features) guilt, etc.

The gun control crusade is premised on the presumption of guilt. Since it does not control the behavior of criminals, it's intent must be to disarm law-abiding members of society, and, in following, to further empower minority interests, both public and private, domestic and foreign, which do not abide by our laws.

There is a general concensus that mentally ill people should not have access to guns - many of the recent mass shootings have been done by people that appeared to have mental problems - often undiagnosed.

I am trying to envision a law that precluded the mentally ill from buying guns. Most of these people have not committed a crime. There are a small group of peaple that have court orders identifying them as mentally ill; my understanding is that such people are already precluded from buying guns. A dermination of mental illnes is normally made by a mental health professional like a psychologist. So we would need to somehow rely on mental heath professionals to add the name of the mentally ill person to the "do not buy guns" list. How else would you do it?

But such a process would have huge problems. Suppose Mr. LaPierre went to see a doctor who believes that Mr. LaPierre's idea are nuts. So the Dr. adds adds Mr. Pierre's name to the "Do Not Buy" list. So we would need to have an appeal process, and an appeal of the appeal process, etc. Since mental illness is often a subjective process.

Are there other ideas out there to prevent the menally ill from buyuing or obtaining guns? Would such laws have prevented the recent shootings in Tuscon, Colorado, Wisconsin or Newtown.

I am not arguing pro gun or anti gun positions. I',m simply asking how do we restruct gun acces for mentall ill.

Any other ideas?
Lyn
