"Rapper Lil Poopy’s dad cleared of abuse."

"Brockton police filed an abuse and neglect complaint against the 9-year-old rapper’s father, Luis Rivera, in February, saying that letting the fourth-grader rhyme about
cocaine and risque themes amounted to abuse."

To get you up to speed on why this complaint was filed — perhaps you, like me, had never even heard of Lil Poopy — here's video and a time-stamped list of the worst things about it. Note that a much-repeated line is: "Coke ain't a bad word it's only soda."
0:44  Coke is a bad word. Maybe not like your more high-rent bad words, but 9-year-olds have little business drinking soda, much less rapping a whole song about it. What rhymes with flax seed? Also: Mayor Mike Bloomberg would probably, rightly, beg to differ with your assertion.

0:45  Ohhhh, you’re telling me people are saying the "coke" thing is a reference to cocaine? Well that's not good....

1:38  Again, you should not be drinking soda, Lil Poopy....

Naming your kid Lil Poopy sounds like abuse to me.

Ignorance, you took the low-hanging fruit.

Damn you!

I'll go out on a limb, here, and just go ahead and assume that "Lil" is short for "Little."

Is that the endearing way of saying his kid is a little shit?

Lil' Poopy's no Courvoisier Winetavius Richardson, much less a Taco B. M. Monster.

Colonel, it's a way of saying his child has shit his pants, but only a little bit.

Lena Dunham, Obama being sexist, Michelle being whiny, and Lil Poopy.

Definite pattern.

Man, you people got bogged down in the subject of the rapper's name. Obviously, pop music artists have been taking negative sounding names since the days of The Troggs.

Let's move on to the topic of the police filing a complaint against the father for letting his son make this video.

Come on!

How about Buddy Holly and the Crickets? Crickets! Those are insects! What kind of people would call themselves insects? That's just terrible. I can't get past this name! Jeez!!! Crickets!

I hate that rap shit, but that's probably because I'm an Old Dawg.

Blues is now viewed as an "art form." I play the blues.

It sure as hell didn't start out as an art form. The origins of the blues are just as funky and tawdry as those of rap.

Just like in rap, the early days of blues had a lot to do with whorehouses, black minstrelsy, living large, conjuring up the devil and getting some ass.

The blues is pretty domesticated and arty now, but the genre started out in the shithouse.

This is related to the father/son issue. You could argue that the father is training his son in what is likely to be a lucrative career. Should that be illegal?

In our modern times a 9 year old kid imbibing a Coca Cola is viewed as bad as a 9 year old kid snorting a line of cocaine was when I was that age.

A majority of blacks seem to be operating on a moral and aesthetic system surrounding sexuality that whites cannot comprehend.

Since I've lived in black communities in Chicago, San Francisco (when they existed) and Brooklyn, I can attest to that.

The same could be said for Filipinos. Homosexuality is so easily accepted in Filipino culture, without the need for all the angst that whites attach to it. Prostitution is also just accepted with a shrug of the shoulders as an inevitable part of the human condition.

And, liberals keep saying that there aren't any differences between ethnic groups. Well, we're supposed to celebrate Diversity, but we're not supposed to notice that it exists. Or, something like that.

No, it's racist and brain dead. Compare it to the old R&B of the 50s. At least there you had some harmony, a melody line, and the occasional good lyric. How hard is it to come up wif combos of ho, bitch, mofo, sh*t, bust a cap, and f*ck?

I used to hear black guys do the same for 15 minutes at a stretch on the P&W twice a day.

In the old days, it would have been classed as snappy patter if there had been any wit associated with it.

Funny list!

I'm appalled the police filed charges. What next? Some busy single mother gets charged for letting her 9year old daughter sing "Bootylicious"?

Don't forget that, in the slave culture, the one thing they enjoyed that was encouraged was making little slaves.

It was a safe escape.

Brockton police seem to have too much time on their hands if they're worried about 9-yo rappers.

Why? The STATE has won, and the idea of free citizens and personal liberty has lost. The STATE can do whatever the fuck it wants, to whoever the fuck it wants, whenever the fuck it wants.

They can make people buy stuff they don't want, they can tell people they're not allowed to buy stuff they DO want. They can take your children for drinking Coca-Cola, while selecting self-professed cocaine users to the highest office in the land in order to arm cocaine dealers with government supplied firearms.

There's no point in getting outraged by this shit anymore. The people have spoken, and they have decided that government trumps culture and personal liberty, and that the idea of restraint on the government is the one truly outrageous idea that can't be tolerated. Hell, professor, that's exactly what you wanted. You just didn't realize the implications of making the STATE the only part of society that matters. Liberty is dead, long live the Leviathan.

I'm going to guess that the father, despite just feeling the intrusive power of an out of control government, will still be voting democrat. If he bothers to vote at all.

Althouse can be pretty funny sometimes.

She works in a non-visual medium, and it's tougher to get the jokes when you can't refer to visual cues.

Lil Poopy is Luis Rivera Jr. The Boston Herald had this to say about him and his dad in February:

"Police said they found Luis M. Rivera holed up in a bathroom with his two kids, including his then-
7-year-old son, when police busted into a Brockton apartment in November 2010 and found heroin and cocaine."

The Daily Mail (UK) today reports:

"The fourth grader performs with Morrocan-born rapper French Montana, the founder and CEO of Cocaine City Records. He raps with Montana's group 'Coke Boyz' at dance clubs and makes about $7,500 for every performance."

According to the Atlantic Wire (in March):

"maybe outside stress has been seeping into Poopy and Montana's relationship. The latter was shot at last night in an incident that left one person dead." The shooting was a drive-by into a crowd around Montana's tourbus after a performance in Philly.

My initial reaction was that the state's investigation was another instance of government overreach. However, when Dad has a record of having his kids around junk and coke, and lets Junior perform in adult dance clubs where alcohol is served, for a record label that's had at least one shooting after a concert, it looks like the concern was about more than the video.

Can we call this over now? Come up with something new & exciting? Because rap is now at the "Asia" stage of devolution. (Asia being the corporate rock supergroup of "Heat of the Moment" "fame". Sorry if your mileage varies/d.) Rap started off as the music of rebellion, something totally different and surprising, drawing from many sources. Now it's the soundtrack of the sound asleep, the spin in spinning, the "heat of the moment." Next, please.

RAP RIP.
