"Sometimes they score 1. Sometimes they score 3. And they never explain!"

From rhhardin in yesterday's café: "Armstrong and Getty's sports report on the NBA finals game 1 mp3, by their guy who never watches sports."

I listened to that this morning. Loved it. Especially the noting of uniform colors and lack of halftime show.

The podcast for the first hour is here.

The 4 hours of podcasts show up around 3pm eastern time each day.

Their first hour is best, before they run out of material or get a loser first guest, though there are exceptions.

Marissa Mayer came on once, to hawk some useless new Google search feature, and was put off in a feminist sort of way by A&G's report on their simultaneous search for Merissa Mayer nude.

An email of reprimand followed.

THAT'S NOT FUNNY!

If he's confused by "Sometimes they score 1. Sometimes they score 3. And they never explain!" then he shouldn't watch tennis. Fifteen points, then 30, then 40, with no rhyme or reason. Why not 1,2,3?

I want the Cable Channel that Only Shows the Cheerleaders for the Entire Length of the Game. They Practice, They Train: why not Dedicate a Camera to Appreciate the Fruits of Their labor? To follow their Emotional Ups-and-Downs in a Close Game? To see them Towel off Sweat from a Particularly Energetic Routine?

Afterward: Locker Room Interviews for Insight on their Performance.

Interviewer: How do You Feel about your Squad's Performance in Your Team's Come-From-Behind Victory?

Head Cheerleader: Cheering is a Team Sport: we Really Supported Each Other in Cheering on Our Team. We had put Special Emphasis in the Last Week on the 'Sassy-Hip-Thrust-Head-Turned-Over-Shoulder' Move, and I Believe the Hard Work Paid Off.

Interviewer: What did you Think about the Events of the Last Five Minutes of the Game?

Head Cheerleader: Well, Annabelle had been Struggling with a Tight Thigh Muscle all Game, but she Toughed it Out in a Gutsy Performance.

Interviewer: Any Final Thoughts?

Head Cheerleader: I would Just Like to say We always Believe Our Team Will Come From Behind. It is Such a Great Feeling: You can Feel them Getting Into the Zone, Pushing it Up Court, and it gives Us a Tingly Sensation -- we Know its Going to Happen!

Interviewer: How do You Feel about your Squad's Performance in Your Team's Heart-Breaking Loss Tonight?

Head Cheerleader: When the Team Loses we All Lose. To Fully Commit to All of the Slow Hip Gyrations and Frisky Head-Shakes and Not Come out with the Win...It Takes it out of You.

Interviewer: So What Do You Do after a Tough Game Like This?

Head Cheerleader: We Take Long, Hot Showers and Console Each Other. Sometimes a Nice Hug in the Shower gives Us the Resolve to Come Out The Next Day with Strengthened Resolve: we WILL Thrust Harder, we WILL Arch Our Backs with Greater Commitment.

Sports Bar.
Three Screens showing The Game.
Nine Screens Showing the Cheerleader Channel.
Guys with Girlfriends Grouped at the Tables by the Three "Game" screens.
Guys with Girlfriends Sneaking Peeks at the Cheerleader Channel Screens when they Think their Girlfriends aren't Looking.
Girlfriends know that They Are Looking.

I went to so many games as a child. Basketball, baseball, football; games, games, games. I always hoped for a halftime show. A baseball game was always especially promising because there might be a fireworks show at the end.

Sometimes the band would make formations of pictures and words on the football field. That ruled.

Watching sports I know nothing about is pretty much the only reason I watch the Olympics anymore.

We watched the movie Lagaan recently, which is a great movie, which involved a good long while of me and my wife trying to figure out the rules of cricket.

I've been listening to Armstrong & Getty for almost 5 years. They have a podcast and it's worth a listen. They are not shock jocks or the regular talk show. They can go from riffing on the current viral video and then move onto a serious discussion of the latest political topic
