Naked Bob Dylan Robot has something to say about the meaning of "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat."

As channeled by betamax3000:
Well, you look so pretty in it
Honey, can I jump on it sometime?

The Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat Represents the Stylish Repression of the Sexual Urges of the Hat-Wearing Woman -- the Hat is a "Pillbox", thus referencing both Birth Control and Containment --, and How those Urges Create a Corresponding Attraction in the Male, as the Leopard-Skin Pattern Stimulates Animal Urges. This Becomes More Obvious in the Following Lines, where the Titular Hat is Compared to A Mattress:

Yes, I just wanna see If it's really that expensive kind
You know it balances on your head
Just like a mattress balances
On a bottle of wine
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

That the Mattress is Balanced On a Bottle of Wine Implies that the Man is Contemplating the Use of Alcohol to Achieve the Goal of "jump(ing) on it sometime."

However, this Desire Remains Unrequited, as Evidenced in the Following lines:

Well, if you wanna see the sun rise Honey,
I know where We'll go out and see it sometime
We'll both just sit there and stare
Me with my belt Wrapped around my head
And you just sittin' there
In your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Notice that they Will "Sit and Stare": there is No Jumping Upon the "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat". Furthermore, The Man Now Has a Belt Wrapped Around His Head, Indicating Restraint of His Hat-Jumping Thoughts, and -- Possibly -- Implying a Restraint Around His Phallic Head. Meanwhile, the Woman is "just sittin' there" and there is no further mention of a Mattress.

I wish betamax would not post so much. He's amusing at times, but less is more.

He's actually very careful about where and when he posts. He's obviously a very highly skilled writer. Probably professional. I respect your opinion, deborah, but mine is exactly the opposite: I wish betamax would post more.

You say, "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat", and for some reason, I think of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Disturbing.

Pardon me while I go see if there are any good Westerns on tonight.

I thought that Bloomfield played guitar on that track. Turns out the (good) guitar parts are Robbie Robertson. (Dylan plays some lead for fun.) Is Robertson deliberately playing like Bloomfield? Or maybe he didn't really develop his signature style for another couple of years.

My money is on betamax being a woman. The give away are all those capital letters.

Meade, I appreciate your opinion, but I find there are a few too many threads he still gets carried away in. But yes, he's gotten better about it. Diff'rent stokes.

deborah - If you are reading all of this blog (or any blog this long) there is a problem. Embrace serendipity. Resign yourself to missing some good things.

I'm with Meade. I find myself scanning some of the threads just to find betamax stuff.

deborah, Lem was the same way for a while.

And betamax should keep writing as much a desired. In blog commenting, the Mendoza line is a goal. Betamax is over it.

Okay, just put me down as cranky.

Deborah should comment more often until Betamax feels the competition like Gulliver did on his travels. That's my strategy. Seriously Betamax is a blessing.

Our travels today put us into a raft with three Central Florida College students, all from Minnesota, with a guide, also from Minnesota who graduated last year from a small Minnesota college.WTF with Midwestern culture overwhelming us.

We enjoyed the young guys a lot. The water was four feet higher than normal level, and no boulders were visible although many large wave currents soaked us the whole way.

Isn't that a pot/kettle thing right there?

You'll notice, of course, it's not the Stylish Repression of the Sexual Urges BY the Hat-Wearing Woman, but "of" - so we're talking merely about a repressed woman with a hat. John Kerry in a dress who wouldn't put out even if she wanted to. She just sits there.

Wow.

Call me after therapy or whatever,...

Sounds self-deprecating and probably untrue.

Male. I like the Capital Letters to Imply a Rhythm and Negate E.E. Cummings.

"Is Robertson deliberately playing like Bloomfield? Or maybe he didn't really develop his signature style for another couple of years." Robertson Developed a Succinct Biting Style with the Hawks. I Don't think it Bloomfield-esque but I Can See the Connection: my Take: Dylan Chose Bloomfield to Approximate His Synchronicity With Robertson. Although Bloomfield on the Basement Tapes would've Been Amazing.

The Thing About Commenting is There is No Immediate Feedback. Was it Funny? Was it Insightful? Was it Really That Bad?

I Left for the Afternoon Thinking I Might had Overstayed My Welcome: I tend to Ghost Late, Irritate and Etc Etc Etc.

Ann: Thank You, Sincerely. I Spent A Fair Amount of Time On this Comment Trying to Add Something Insightful To the Conversation without Kerosene and Too Many Paragraphs. Maybe Cotton Candy but With a Vitamin or Two. Put Effort Into Re-Purposing Themes That Stayed Honest to Your Original Point. Plus, I Like Revisiting Dylan in New Contexts, as you Probably Have Noticed.

Heaven Forbid, I Think I Will Stay Around Awhile.

Don't you believe it, Professor. It can't be true. It can't be. It just can't.

FWIW I actually owned (and wore) a leopard-skin pill-box hat. In the 60s.

But let's not be too silly about the meaning of the pill box. Good grief. Oral contraceptives never came in a pill-box shaped pill box. They were in strips, or circles because the order had to be followed to be effective.

According to the great wikipedia the pill-box style of hat is worn by a number of groups including military dress. Men, that is. Way before the Pill became the name.

If you were to take the leopard skin pillbox hat and dye it red and provide it a tassel, you'd have the finest of all hats, the fez.

Everything is better with a fez. Everything is funnier, more relaxed, more comfortable, at ease, egalitarian, because of what the fez is not -- a turban, with all of the unhappy sumptuary laws that come with them.

Sumptuary means being sumptuous. And fez is the opposite of that.

No more raghead calumny, no siree, no more turban inequality and social disruption and discontentment, and so much can be said with the flick of a tassel.

The cartoonist will put a fez on a fish to depict otherworldliness oppositeness and whimsy.

You should buy one.

Stand out from the crowd, you can never go wrong by returning to basics.

200 posts is the goal?!?

Or is that a 20% success rate?

Cause I can do either!

Either Way I am Doing My Best Not to Get Sent Down to the Minors.

But if I were to Be Sent Down to the Metaphorical Baseball Minor Leagues it would Be Great if the Team wore Fezs. A Few More Fly Balls Lost in the Sun Perhaps, but the Tassles Alone Makes it Worth it.

Naked Bob Dylan Robot Hinted at the Power of the Fez in "Black Diamond Bay":

As the morning light breaks open the Greek comes down
And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write
"Pardon monsieur" the desk clerk says
Carefully removes his fez
"Am I hearing you right ?"

In the Song's World of Basement Boilers Blowing, Suicidal Strangers, Erupting Volcanos, Earthquakes and Walter Cronkite the Fez-Wearing Desk Clerk Alone is the Voice of Sanity. Indeed, He Must Remove His Fez To Attempt to Understand the Suicidal Greek's Sad Predicament.

Later, the Fez-Wearing Desk Clerk -- when Confronted with the Danger of a Volcano's Approaching Lava -- Responds with A Calm Serendipity that is Best Accompanied with a Fez:

Then the volcano erupted
And the lava flowed down from the mountain high above
The soldier and the tiny man were crouched in the corner
Thinking of forbidden love
But the desk clerk said "It happens every day"

The Fact that What Little We Know about this Desk Clerk is His Unflappable Nature and His Wearing of a Fez it Makes Sense to See the Connection Between these Two Pieces of Information.
