"How I’ve wished, over the years, I’d never told anyone about that poke in the butt."

A sentence in "The Girl," the authorship of which is credited to Samantha Geimer, whom Roman Polanski raped in 1977, and Lawrence Silver, who is Geimer's lawyer, and someone named Judith Newman, to whom the NYT book reviewer Lisa Schwarzbaum attributes the book's "lively, pugnacious narrative voice."

Schwarzbaum says the book is "a feisty, almost jaunty you’re-not-the-boss-of-me account" and "autobiography as a feminist tactic for Geimer to own her sexuality," because — I guess — that's what the lawyer and the pugnacious-narrative-voice provider figured would be the best approach to selling a graphic tale of the poke in the butt anal rape of a child.

Unfathomably, Schwarzbaum goes for a comic tone: "And wasn’t that what second-wave feminists fought for: our butts, ourselves?"

It is not uncommon for the victim of an assault (sexual or otherwise) to minimize it in conversation. It is a way of saying, "This does not define me."

In retrospect, her life may have been easier had she never reported the rape. It would not be the first thing anyone meeting her would want to talk about. It would not be something she has to constantly relive instead of it being safely buried in the past.

For the sake of other potential victims, she was right in coming forward, however.

Yeah, Donald, me too. I'm guessing maybe that "Creepy Uncle Sam" ad from Opt Out, featuring the rubber glove, could be coming next!

Exorcise the victim-stigma ideology. This would ameliorate a bunch of problems all over the political and legal treatment of the crime of rape.

But it wouldn't serve the porpoises of most of the actors on this issue.

35 years ago, Geimer was forced to testify by power-intoxicated DAs that threatened to jail her if she didn't. The DAs cared not one whit for her, only advancing their own careers and seeking more power.

She was no virgin at the time, but understood both Polanski and the State DA exploited her, and said what the DAs did with their theats and coercion hurt her life more than what Polanski did - by far.

It should have been handled much better. Somebody at a judge level should have reined in the DAs seeking a circus show trial. Polanski should have had to pay money for damages and also plea to a no jail sex offense charge and signed something indicating that it might be legal under age of consent to tap 14-16 year olds in Europe at the time, as a no never mind...but in America, a wealthy man like him had 1 strike against him and any next time he was caught with jailbait he would be sharing a San Quentin jail cell with Black Bubba.

This all was happening then, as now, with a constant stream of black and Latina women aged 12-16 impregnated by older men that California authorities ignored seeking prosecution on. Only Polanski's celebrity gave the prosecutors the motive to treat him different than the thousands of Cali men out knocking up underaged ho's in return for giving them drugs and bling.

Feminists fought for the right of middle-aged men to rape teenage girls? Who knew?

Rape or "rape-rape" is a crime committed against the individual and society. She may have wanted to maintain her privacy, but she promoted the general Welfare by exposing the violation. Thank you.

What's wrong with the victim "cashing in" on the experience? I'm glad this woman has had an ok life, and, if she can parlay a few bucks out of the notoriety, then good for her. She's apparently suffered more from the publicity than Polanski.

compare and contrast the NYT support for friendly pokes in the butt of 13 y/o drugged girls by a 42 y/o man in a position of total power, with their view of the double plus goodness of today's college sex codes where consenting sex between 21 y/o students after a couple of drinks is prima facie proof of rape...

This case is full of surprises. It seems that in addition to the feminists cheerfully giving their imprimatur for child-rape, it is also perfectly acceptable to rape a child if that child is "no virgin". Again, who knew?

Wow... I usually don't comment about other people's comments, but this Cedarford post just has to be addressed: "She was no virgin"- Really? So drug-raping a 12 year old is permissible because she had it coming?/wanted it?/was asking for it?... "Polanski should have had to pay some money...and sign something"- Because Polanski was under the impression that Europeans are allowed to rape 12 year olds? Yeah, it was just a misunderstanding of the culture, sure, no problem... "sharing a jail cell with Black Bubba"- Yes, to some people nothing is scarier than a black man... "constant stream of 12 to 16 year old black and latina women impregnated by older men that California authorities ignored seeking prosecution on"- Really? Such as where and when? Please cite even one case... "underage ho's in return for giving them drugs and bling" Poor Polanski. See, it was a business arrangement. She got drugged, and he got laid. If only he wasn't a celebrity, then all would have been forgiven. Damn that 12 year old whore and overzealous prosecutors coat-tailing a celebrity's harmless little indiscretion... All in all, this Cedarford post exemplifies a pretty sick, twisted and demented mentality. Think about what you've written here, Cedarford. Very ugly and disturbing...

What? She's not a charity. If you want to give to charity, give to charity.

She's selling a book, so my sympathies are with the readers. This book looks incredibly fake, so to consume it as if you were getting close to her -- already a questionable enterprise -- is just dumb.

I can back up that this was a crime committed against "society" as well as the individual. This crime did more to sour me on old guys at a young age than anything I can think of. I was several years younger than that girl, but she was older sister age to me, which meant I identified myself and people my age as the targets.

I saw men of a certain age as skeevy predators from that moment forward -- especially entertainment guys, but anyone really. I didn't think about it much as I got older, except harboring a dislike of Roman Polanski as he faded into obscurity, but the conclusions I drew at a very young age were still there affecting my life at an older age, if you see what I mean. I had to disentangle it much later.

Average Joe - what a pile of self-righteous swill.
I absolutely guarantee you have not raised a peep about the average age of sex for black males in California being 14.8, or 1/4th of black females had sex at age 14 or younger..with half of those reporting having had sex with black males aged 21 ad older. Hispanics and whites slightly older, but the number of all race teen girls getting it on is in the millions in that state aged 15 and younger. And again, with 100s of thousands of "polanskis" at it with the little ho's..
Not a peep about what is happening now and what the solution is, except you would probably puff up and say "We need to kill millions of those men!!" or similar unrealistic draconian punishments that only are said to make you think you are oh, so moral.

Instead you get in a holy lather about a 40 year old case. The Geimer case should be a learning experience for society...what can be done - besides idiots in puffed up bluster talking about how we need to quadruple the jail population by declaring unfortunately common acts of sex a major felony that will be vigorously prosecuted on 10s of millions of those in the minority population of America (mainly). With many 100s of whites also jailed for decades.

You think the "War on Drugs" was stupid and ridiculous...try a War on Minorities. You don't have remotely CLOSE to the lawyers, jails, and cops to make your American Gulag work.

So I return to Geimer, who says she emails Polanski from time to time and wishes him well and does not hate him like the power-mad DAs that dragged her into the circus trial. And return to my proposal that the men have to pay a big fine to the jailbait, and if they keep it up, they get sex offender status and serious jail time. And we need a way to force gang bangers up to gay Hollywood moguls to pay up for child and medical costs they generate with their kiddie toys, rather than society picking up the tab.

Austin said...

The case gets curiouser and curiouser. It now seems that because minority youth are evidently engaging in underage sex with one another, and because in some cases minority youth are raped by adults, it is permissible for a 40 year old man to rape a 13 year old child. Provided, of course, that the 13 year old is "no virgin". The ugly, pathological, and depraved mentality that supports this foul illogic is shocking.

Cedarford said...

Create a law that says we must charge any gang banger who dangles bling or drugs for a young ho' with a major felony and lock them up for a decade or more.
You will need to create an American Gulag system 4 times as large as what the Bolsheviks, then Stalin, devised.

It's like the ignorant conservatives yelling back in the hippie era that several thousand drug dealers "Must be tried and executed" for poisoning our youth. It made the dumb conservatives sound all powerful and moral with their foolish loud blather...calling for "easy to do" mass executions. But it was stupid and clueless about cost, public will, and the sheer scale of difficulty getting their mass executions through the legal system and what friends and relatives of the condemned dealers would do.

To work, punishments have to be realistic and fairly administered. One in 10,000 cannot be singled out for trial while the prosecutors let others disobey the law with impunity ...It's the core problem in draconian statutory rape laws. And draconian drug laws.
Enforce the law and cripple the entire legal system on cost and 100s of thousands of men fighting the consequences with every means at their, and at taxpayers disposal. Borrow 100s of billions from CHina to build a Gulag System..
Or be like California and the states - Knowing that if they only single out a few as examples while ignoring prosecutions of all culprits eligible for 30 years in jail for having a go at willing jailbait - judges will throw it out on appeal for capricious enforcement. So they make the call that certain laws are too much trouble to be enforced and the right thing to do is make the laws more sensible. Every state has made that call...so take your moral puffery to your state Reps and Governor and demand your own State Gulag system...

Or moderate the law to make it a huge fine...then a felony for repeat offenses and getting irrevocable convicted sex offender status for those that refuse to accept jailbait is off-limits...

In this changing, uncertain world one must admit that no matter how disgustingly repulsive he is, there is a certain degree of predictability and stability in seeing that C-fudd still tries to whitewash ass-raping child molesters every chance he gets from Polanski to Sandusky. At least he's preference-neutral, a political correctness so apropos in the Age of Obama.
